Re: When D&D lost its soul

But where did D&D lose it's soul? Hummm, I'd say the minute Gary Gygaxx sold TSR's rights to WotC. The minute they tried to put there spin on the game, hiring all new people, with all new art styles, all new descriptions of spells, new mechanics (which some are good) it just seemed to die. I re...

Re: Walls of force. What goes through?

I'd agree gaze attacks would work through it. The SRD confirms this:

"Gaze attacks can operate through a wall of force."

Re: 1 or 2e. Can a caster "Forget a spell"?

I allow spellcasters to forget spells. But forgetting is the same as casting, in the sense that you cannot refill that slot until you've rested. Additionally, i remember a rule somewhere (not sure if 1e or 2e) where when a caster is knocked out (or goes negatives), he loses all spells he had in his ...

Re: Neverwinter Nights Comeback - 16 years later!

I actually still have NWN installed on my PC. Picked it up from GOG on a Christmas sale years ago. I still play some of the fanmade modules on it from time to time. Never joined an online world with it, though. Are the servers even still up for that?

Re: 1 or 2e.. To train or not to train..

From the DMG, Chapter 7: Magic, under 'Going Up in Levels': First, whenever a character attains a new spell level, allow the player one new spell immediately. You can choose this spell, let the player choose it, or select it randomly. The rationale behind this is simple: All the long hours of study ...

Re: 1 or 2e.. To train or not to train..

I do the same as TigerStripedDog. Leveling up does not require training, but it does require a rest (it doesn't just happen on the field). But proficiencies do require training. For spells, when a mage hits a new spell level, they get one freebie. Any others they need to research themselves, or trad...

Re: So what truly constitutes an evil act?

Is this related to the idea that several D&D editions held (all of them, maybe? I'm not sure) that using poison is an evil act?

Re: Paladins/clerics/rangers.. Rank structure??

In my homebrew setting, churches that have a hierarchy determine rank based on level. Since party members tend to be around the same level, that means they'd be equals.

Re: What PC level for +3 or +4 items??

I don't have any hard rules for it. I'm actually terrible at rolling up treasure, so unless I specifically lay out magical items for the party to pick up, it is not uncommon for them to hit level 5 and still not have even +1 gear yet. (True story: I once had to roll for the hoard of a mated pair of ...

Well, I can confirm it is NOT in Legends and Lore. Do you remember if it was campaign specific?

Re: Handling abandoned/dropped out PCs

I've never been comfortable playing other people's characters. If a player drops, I do NPC their character until the current adventure is over, then I have them leave the party. They then retire from adventuring and go home (or find a home, for those PCs that are orphans/homeless/etc.). Normally the...

Re: How big a group is too big?

Admittedly, I have a hard time turning away anyone who wants to join my games (I just feel bad). But on the other hand, drop-outs tend to be expected, so sometimes it's good to have extras. For instance, if I want 4 players, I may wind up recruiting 6, just in case any flake on me. Followers have ne...

Re: Potions for cleric/mage/thief??

I see the logic in it, though. A Potion of Heroism temporarily increases the level of a fighter, so a version for other classes would also increase their levels. And spellcasting would be part of that. It makes sense that if a cleric suddenly and temporarily gained several levels, they would acquire...

Re: The Top modules of all time according to Dungeon

Excellent! How did you like SSoSM? Hard to say. The DM modified it heavily, by adding real ghosts to it so that their DMPC cleric could charge in and 'rescue' the rest of the party by turning said ghosts. Then that DM quit and another DM took over, and made even more changes to it. So by t...
