Van will relax his stance and lean two handed on his staff.

"Greeting cousin! Garroth here spoke all words true- we are escorting this liberated folk home. What news do you have? If you have had concerns of the goblin band nearby, rest your minds! They are defeated by those and more that are seen here."

Van's going for a dual message: we are who we say we are and there are more of us about.

Salem grunts noncommittally at Boyd’s chastisement. Still, the Dwarf knows that wild elves in particular are remarkably skilled hunters, and keeping upwind would be as natural to them as breathing. Likely the only reason the Mintoaur smelled them was because they wanted him to…

Garroth knees respectfully, introducing the others and giving account of himself and the group. His speech and mannerisms don’t seem to soften the Wild Ones to him, but neither do they seem to antagonize them.
Signa’s is not a name to invoke lightly. She says, We will speak to him of this. Her tone gives no indication whether the conversation will be pleasant or not.

The Dark One’s skin is not what worries me, Minotaur. She says coldly, emphasizing the last word slightly. It is his kind’s well-earned reputation for hatred, deceit and betrayal… some of us do not easily forget.

Her eyes narrow almost imperceptibly at Vanidur’s chosen greeting, then more obviously at his mention of ‘more’. You are alone now, cousin. She says. What others do you claim to travel with?

===
Those in the group from the Fenris Forest area (Garroth, Van and the rescued captives) would know that Indendien and Dillosel were particularly congenial for wild elves (probably something to do with gratitude at being freed by the party and necessary comradery with the other captives ;) ).

Most other wild elves are prickly at best, and the attitudes of these two are not uncommon among them in the least when dealing with non-elves or even non-Sylvans. There was probably a 50/50 chance the ‘cousin’ term would irk one of them, but even then it’s a very mild offense.

"May I speak?" asks Linar.

If granted, he will say, "It was Signa that asked me to help clear out the golblin lair." (Otherwise he will remain silent and still until circumstances change..)

"No..... it is not a name to be invoked lightly... if I am truthful and you hinder us, you aid and abet evil, and harm the Forrest.

Go check with Ataya if you still have any reservations, as she helped me to find these allies in the fight against evil...

We have rot the time to stay here and be insulted, so let us pass in peace.... or not.... cousin."

Garroth rests one wrist on top of the maul handle, the square head of which rests on the ground.. With the handle coming up to his hip, the other hand will casually stroke his chin, while waiting for a response.

Van will give a look to convey a "Your move" feeling to the assembled lot of questioners.

Wood elves never did it for Van. Elven hill billies at best.

When Linar asks to speak, he is not prevented from doing so. When he also names Signa, the wild elf woman mutters something that sounds like a long talk with him... obviously meaning Signa.

Garroth begins speaking again, and the Sylvan's features darken further. Dare you say we harm the forest?! She asks incredulously. When the minotaur calls her 'cousin' she almost flinches, glaring at him hard. The male elf in front of Linar glares past the Drow for the time being at the Minotaur.

Abruptly the party becomes aware of the presence of at least eight other creatures around the road. The figures don't so much move into view as gradually become more noticeable. They appear at odd intervals near bushes or trees, or in branches far overhead to either side of the road.

The civilians begin to crowd in on each other and the human fighters glance to the half-elf for direction. Eariel waves them off, keeping her hands away from her own weapon.

We came to find your purpose, and warn you.

"Corellon is my master and I mean you and the forest no harm," says Linar, very slowly extending his hands out to arms' length. "Garoth, please don't antagonize; this is their home."

Looking at the wild elf spokesman, Linar continues, "May the Protector strike me me down if I speak false to you. It is as we have said, namely that we cleared the golbin lair and now are escorting those held prisoner therein back to their home. Also, we found an altar and a symbol in the lair that we do not recognize. So, what is the warning?"

"I almost died defending your home!" Garroth grows. "I do not claim you harm the Forrest but will point out that threatening and harming one that freey gives their life to defend it is the same thing."

(It should be noted that Garroth always had his maul, even when kneeling, it was in his left hand on the ground beside him, so it was always in his hand.. he actually did the opposite of reaching towards it by placing it head first on the ground and resting his arm on the upright handle. When walking, he carries and walks with it like a staff. This might change their actions... nonobserver could have possibly though he was trying to arm himself...)

"Come Thoreau..if I say here I will likely be forced to endure more insults and not be permitted to make any..."

. Garroth picks up his cat and his maul, just under the head, and turns his back on the speakers and resumes travel toward Bordertown...

Van is with Garroth on this one.

"Sad times when the fair folk of the forest find enemies in all who walk under the shade. If it is a toll you want, speak your price. Otherwise we will be on our way."

"They are checking our intent, Van, to protect their home and such is to be expected. My presence is sufficient to trigger that," comments Linar, trying to calm things. "There has been no mention of a toll, rather the offer of help in the form of a warning of what lies ahead of us."

Looking at the wild elf Linar says simply, "I will listen to your warning," and waits, hoping the companions will remain.

Van will turn too.... Just barely able to keep the look of "jeeez!" off his face. The High Elf preferred being the source of the dramatic for the party, not subject to it.

Linar doesn't appear to notice the dramatics.

The wild elven woman is visibly surprised at the Drow’s calm demeanor among the gradually escalating situation. She gives him an appraising look. She blatantly ignores Garroth’s remarks and Vanidur’s mention of a toll. Still watching the Drow she nods. It seems at least one of you understands. The male elf near Linar gives him a strange look as if seeing something he never had before; only slightly less disconcerting than the glare previously directed at the Drow.

The woman continues, There has been a rise in activity near the rift, though if your claims are true you are already aware of that to some extent. A troll pack has been sighted near Quel Salas. By now most of them have been dealt with, but there may be stragglers. Near bordertown there is a small Orcish encampment. It is new, perhaps within the last tenday. They are only brigands, but they are unusually bold. She makes a small signal, and the additional figures in the forest melt away silently into the foliage. We will speak with Signa. Stick to the road. With that the two remaining wild elves disappear into the trees, quickly concealed by the thick growth.

Eariel lets out a heavy breath and shoots a look at the Minotaur. Laying a hand on Linar’s shoulder she says a quiet Thank you. I will feel much better about this whole month of disasters once we are within the walls.
