Ooc: sorry I made a tracking roll, which is D20 but will use % for scent and D20 for regular tracking from now on.

Ic: Garroth's eyes narrow and his breath shortens... Orcs.... he has trouble focusing and avoiding the urge to go go foth and attempt to murder them all like they deserve...

He whispers to Thoreau in eleven .. "Orcs, 300 yards.. tell the dark one and return. Repeat to me.."

Thoreau uncoils from the Minotaur's shoulders and says in a small voice... "Orcs 300 yards..." and jumps down and scampers off toward Linar.. The (familiar) small cat scampers out of the woods and rubs himself against Linars boots.. repeating in eleven "Orcs, 300 yards..". and then disappears back into the forest towards Garroth's position.. lost to all in the shadows.

Garroth continues slowly forward, paralleling the road. He becomes the hunter, arrow nocked watching for lone targets isolated from the larger group of Orcs.. he knows they will have sentries and keeps his eyes peeled for movement among the darkness in the trees.. shielding his own body heat signature with foliage and tree trunks as he advances stealthily using available cover..

Assuming Linar receives the message about orcs he will sweep round in an appropriate arc, being as undetectable as he's able.

Thoreau delivers the missive to the Drw before returning.

[I believe the marching order says Boyd is near Garroth and Van near Linar, so everyone gets word of the Orcs.]

Garroth moves back into the woods as Linar circles deeper into the treeline. Eariel, Hew and Tag ready weapons and keep a tight formation near the increasingly nervous townfolk.

[What positions/actions do the party-members want to take? So far none have been directly sighted.]

Van will ready his staff... keeping the light hidden for now. Perhaps a flaring in the heat of things can cause a moment of advantage for his side.

Whispering, "Orcs... foul creatures. What days are these that such filth walks the surface without care?"

Garroth is 60' left of the path, stalking ahead in his natural surroundings trying to get an advantage and pick off any sentries without raising the alarm.... given the right confines of the trees, he advances with a dagger in each hand now..

( as its dark, I'm assuming that infravision is the method of sight under the tree cover away from any star and moonlight? )

Linar continues the slow, hopefully undetectable sweep, aiming to end back with the group previous location and then to cut a deeper arc forwards in the opposite direction*.

R to left, whereas previously it was left to right. (Or vice versa if I'm recalling incorrectly).

[I failed to mention this last post, but It’s not night time yet, only late afternoon. It is still full daylight out, so infravision isn’t in effect]

Linar circles behind the group, but doesn’t detect any sign of ambush or others. Once done, he begins another arc ahead of the group

Meanwhile Garroth stalks forward through the afternoon forest as quietly as he can. When he nears the area, he barely spots a single orc watching the road from a position 40 yards off. He will spot the group’s advance eventually. The scent of the other orcs has shifted away from the ranger with the wind, but from his last sense of them, they are only a little farther south.

Eariel orders the main group to keep a half-pace for the next 150 yards to give the scouts time to work ahead and return. She and the other soldiers keep wary eyes on the forest around them.

[what is boyd doing during all of this?]

Garroth concentrates on his breathing...

He stops and scans left and right to ensure it is a lone sentry and his buddy isn't hiding nearby.

He circles a little to change his perspective and sniffs... the air again..

If he is certain he is approaching only one sentry, he circles slowly to approach the orc unseen.. fitting a knuckleduster on his left hand. once he is ready he will do a quick advance, using the element of surprise and try and lay the Orc low with a left cross to the Jaw..

... just in case, he will reserve his right arm with the dagger, ready to stab a lung to stop the creature from screaming..

Close quarters fighting check. [1d20] = 2

Knuckleduster [1d20+8] = 18+8 = 26

Forum code: Knuckleduster damage [1d2 + 7] = 1+7 = 8

"No telling how many orcs are about, but this might be a good time to do something unexpected. Any chance there is another trail nearby?" he asks Eariel. "Thought not. Well, best we get ready to thump some heads."
He sets his lance in the sleeve on the side of the saddle, bracing it with his knee in case Salem has to run, and draws his bow. "Might be nothing. Might be an ambush. I expect we shall fine out momentarily."

Garroth scans the brush nearby but doesn’t spot any other orcs. He shifts his position somewhat to test the air again. He picks up the scent of more orcs farther south; out of sight in the dense forest, but likely within earshot. Gradually he approaches the orc, biding his time and getting closer before striking.

Linar circles forward, moving through the forest as quietly as possible. Eventually he spots the Minotaur ahead, focused intently on something. A moment later he spots the orc scout facing the road, just as Garroth charges the last few steps forward. He rears back a massive fist just as the orc turns in total surprise. The ranger slugs the creature with impressive force; it’s head whipping back hard as the blow lands. The orc falls motionless to the ground amid a rustle of leaves.

Meanwhile the group advances along the road. Boyd readies his bow and Eariel confirms that she knows of no other path. The others continue forward slowly.

======
Ausie: Close quarters fighting is only for cramped fighting conditions such as underground caverns, dungeons or inside buildings designed only for M sized creatures (since Garroth is Large). It doesn’t apply outdoors.
Also, I’m not sure what the +8 is in the d20 macro for. His punching thac0 is 16. Also, the knuckle Duster damage is slightly higher [1d3+8]

Garroth rushes the orc scout
Orc scout is Surprised!

Garroth punches at the Orc Scout (+4 species enemy) with the knuckle duster in his Left
Thac0 16 vs AC 6 (+4): Need 6+
[1d20] = 18, hit!
For [1d3+8] damage (min 9 dmg)
Orc Scout Dies!

Where there's one orc there's a bundle of trouble to follow..

Linar silently and carefully sweeps another arc out, this time tangentially away from Garroth and the (dead?) orc, intending to catch a pack of follow-on orcs from the side (or rear flank) when they see/charge at Garroth.
He briefly smiles at the possibility of orcs thinking they can overwhelm the Beefy1 and their changes in expression when a third of a ton of pig + rider join in violently and they're then simultaneously surprised by incoming arrows (from Linar).

Garroth looks down at the Orc and grabs it by the hair and cuts its head off with a quick and very powerful slash or two from his dagger..

He takes the head by the hair in his left hand (with the knuckledusters) and crouches low, sniffing and looking for another target as he stalks forward cautiously.. you can never trust those green bastards.. he thinks...

He tries to follow the Orcs tracks back the way it came...

Garroth Visual Tracking [1d20] = 15 The tracks are hard to follow so he bends low and sniffs his way forward..
Scent Tracking [1d100] = 94 Nothing... the proximity of the head was obviously interfering so he tosses it aside..wondering why he wanted it in the first place.. so move ahead silently and slowly listening... and looking for more tracks.)

Ooc: (Tracking roll of 15 might actually be enough for a ranger..if he gets any sort of bonus for Forrest terrain +3 or two or more targets +1 .)

[Yes, Chris. The orc is dead.
Ausie: the forest near the road is only thick enough for a +2 to tracking, but the 15 is enough, if barely.]

Linar picks his way carefully through the forest in an arc away from the road while Garroth checks for tracks before savagely beheading the orcish corpse. The only marks he find belong to the orc he has just slain and approach the position from the south. It seems likely this orc moved forward alone to watch the road, the others perhaps waiting for his call to attack any passers-by.

Meanwhile Linar hears the faint sounds of guttural orcish. Proceeding silently he spots a cluster of them in a group farther back into the woods from the road and to the south of the scout orc’s position. There are eight or nine of the creatures, it is difficult given their positions and distance to be sure, and they are clearly bored from waiting for something…

[Chris, you can roll a Det noise if you want to try to understand them from this distance]
