I'd missed the previous reference to Witch Bolt, my fault.

OK, assuming successful, clear hit and the bolt maintained then if there's a reasonable chance an ally could be impacted by the maintained stream then I'd give them a saving throw, circumstances dictating whether advantage or disadvantage apply. In Jim's current case, if no one moves, then no save required for Jim.

If ally is engulfed, then if the ally is completely obscured it's likely no damage would be taken (by the ally) whereas if only partially obscured then shared damage could occur.

(Indirect) damage via hitting is one I hadn't considered. If the foe is "insulating", e.g. lightning resistant then no indirect damage. Ally would (otherwise) get a saving throw for reduction in shared damage.

thanks. that's really the only spell nix has for pouring on buckets of dmg... albeit slowly. didnt wsnt to risk dropping a party-member in the process
