"Here it is Roger, make us proud in battle". Being quiet, Woody will cast mage armor on Robert.

After listening to any and all replies, Roger says “OK, single file, keep together and follow me; no chatter, please,” and leads the group in a complex path twisting and curling around the pillars. He sings and chants in a language that sounds like guttural elven*.

After some circuits, blue radiance is everywhere and you are lost and floating somewhere not quite real. Blue, shifting light is under, over and all around you..

The light begins to fade and you realise that your feet are planted on rougher, more gritty ground than before. Any Light cantrips seem to have expired. The air smells musty and the rough, rocky ceiling arches some 15’ overhead. Rough, natural rock walls form a 10’ wide alcove around you that opens out after 20’ to the east.

From the darkness something crashes into view and hurtles at the group. It’s a sticky bundle of webbing which hits Roger, who shouts, “Shit!” just before disappearing from view. The light goes out!

After some seconds the webbing burns off harmlessly and light from Roger is restored..

Slightly less than 30’ distant looms a big spider, 10’ across, something dark & viscous dripping from its pincers. Its two front legs end in long, sword-like blades.

History(Int)(0)(Dis)Advantage: [1d20] = 4 [1d20] = 1

"I will never get used to that...

After the web, "Holy shit, look at the size of that one.
Roger, get its attention. We'll flank it."

Initiative: [1d20] = 4

Sue will get his reaction ready to protect the first friendly in range to be attacked.

If he can get on the opposite side of the spider as someone he will. Drawing his longsword on the way.

Longsword: To hit: [1d20+5] = 10+5 = 15 Damage [1d8+3] = 7+3 = 10
(Dis)Adv die if needed: [1d20] = 10

Round 1:
The spider scuttles forwards avoiding Alecia’s column of shadowy flame, while Jim manages to throw his dart into one of Roger’s heat rays. The other heat ray strikes the huge creature on the thorax and raises a blister. [AC24, 13 fire dam] It trundles forward as if to gain revenge on Roger and only Sue’s shield deflection prevents damage* to the unusual ally.

After a brief pause in the savage, but somewhat ineffectual exchange, Woody chills [3 cold dam] a leading leg, Nix electrocutes a stalactite and Sue opens a small crack in the arachnid’s thorax with a hefty longsword blow. [10 slash dam]

Was Sue able to move around the spider after his reaction to deflect for Roger?
If yes he will stay there to keep adv going. If no:
"Jim get around behind this damned thing."

He will use his last spell slot to cast Hunter's Mark, on the spider(Bonus Action), and swing his sword in a huge arc.

Longsword: To hit: [1d20+5] = 20+5 = 25 Damage [1d8+3] = 5+3 = 8
(Dis)Adv die if needed: [1d20] = 2
Crit Dice for LS: [1d8] = 1 [1d8] = 7
Hunter's Mark: [1d6] = 3

He will have his reaction for anyone needing a deflection in range.

Sue wasn't able to do so freely as as the creature effectively fills the space. Crawling underneath is possible but would take 25' movement. Being prone next to this creature could be risky. The ultranimble monk could do so with a lunging somersault (Acrobatics skill check DC 10) to end standing and have an action remaining. Anyone can do so as a 'dash', i.e. take a full round.

Jim will charge toward the spider and at the last second dive into an lunging somersault in an attempt to roll under the spider and pop up behind it.
Acrobatics(7): [1d20+7] = 13+7 = 20
At the rear of the spider, Jim will proceed to lay into the spider
To Hit: [1d20+7] = 14+7 = 21 , Mace Damage: [1d6+5] = 3+5 = 8
Jim will use a ki point to use flurry of blows
To Hit: [1d20+7] = 8+7 = 15 , Unarmed Damage: [1d4+5] = 1+5 = 6 If hit - Dex save vs DC13 or be knocked prone

To Hit: [1d20+7] = 14+7 = 21 , Unarmed Damage: [1d4+5] = 3+5 = 8 If hit - Dex save vs DC13 or be knocked prone
(Dis)Adv if needed: [1d20+7] = 6+7 = 13 (If prone from first unarmed attack)

Round 2:
Alecia equips her mace and tries to push in beneath Roger to trike at the spider. She gets elbowed backwards as Jim gathers himself to charge forward. At the last second the martial artist dives into a lunging somersault, rolling under the spider and pops upright behind it to give its spinnerets a good seeing to. [8, 6 & 8 crush dam] The spider remains upright. Roger flies off the the NE to gain breathing space for his heat ray assaults. The spider bites him reflexively*. After putting a 15’ gap between him and the spider Roger shoots two heat beams that hit a rock and the spider. [10 Fire dam]

The aggressive spider apparently doesn’t like its meal encased in metal as it scuttles forward to try and devour Woody. Jim’s reflexes kick in at this movement and he lands another mace blow to the arachnidan abdomen. [13 crush dam] The spider’s advance intercepts Nix’s Witch Bolt. [GM inspiration, 17 elec dam] The wizard’s Mage Armour stops the two bladed forelegs but even Sue’s shield deflection fails to help against the wicked bite to Woody’s shoulder. [AC17, 7 pierce dam + 13 poison dam]

Woody scuttles backwards out of reach of the deadly pincers, knocking Alecia prone in the process. His hasty Frost Ray barely chills the spider’s visage. [1 cold dam] Nix’x crackling energy bolt plays across the spider, cracking open its thorax as it collapses forever. [21 elec dam]

End of Combat +580 xp each for the spider & storyline bonus +250xp each for trusting/working with Roger

***
Alecia passes round the healing potions scavenged from the Black Banners’ bodies. Woody gets a Greater Healing [4d4+4], while Sue and Roger each get the regular potion. [2d4+2] “Assuming you can use it, of course, Roger.”
The undead fellow replies, “Yes, but only if I can get the bottle open without spilling the contents.”
She smiles and removes the stopper.
The potion floats to the bony jaw and inverts, liquid splashing out through its neck.
Woody recognises the use of a Mage Hand.
Nix sees the odd sight of a magical liquid passing through the bony maw and emerging as a no longer magical liquid.

***
After a short while Roger leads to the front of the cave and asks, "Good to continue?"

Sue will accept the potion and stow it in an easy to reach spot.

"Thank you, I'm sure I will need it soon enough." With a big sigh. "I knew stepping on all those spiders for my Mother would come back to haunt me."
