=====
Racial Abilities [Expanded for reference]

The special powers of the Vistani blood that courses through the veins of a giomorgo enables him to do many things that other men and women cannot. By the same token, however, the fact that this blood is not pure causes half-Vistani to suffer from certain limitations unique to their kind.

A half-Vistana character can accurately identify the plants and animals of the world, just as druids do. He can also determine whether water is safe to drink. This ability requires no more than one round of examination on the part of the character and always succeeds (barring the influences of magic, curses, domain lords, and such).

All giomorgo characters make fires easily and quickly. Provided that fuel and some means of igniting a blaze is at hand, they can start a fire in 1d4 rounds. Normally restrictive conditions, like damp fuel and such, do not affect the giomorgo abilities.

Half-Vistani are familiar with tralaks (a series of glyphs used by the Vistani). In order to recognize a given symbol, the character must make an Intelligence check. If that check succeeds, the Dungeon Master secretly rolls 1d20. On a roll of 1 to 19, the character correctly identifies the meaning of the tralak. If the roll is a 20, however, the character misreads the symbol and gets its meaning wrong.

Equaarians are a nature-loving folk who often become rangers, although other classes are not closed to them. All Equaar characters begin play with the animal lore and land-based riding proficiencies without expending any slots for them. They can also purchase the tracking proficiency by allocating a single slot to it, regardless of their chosen class.

The giomorgo are not without their own burdens. Chief among these is the lunatic or moon madness. It is worth noting that full-blood Vistani possess more resistance to this ailment than the giomorgo.
On the three nights of the month when the moon is full, a half-Vistana character will find himself restless and unable to sleep. Because of this, he cannot heal wounds without magical aid and is utterly unable to memorize new spells. The physical toll that this takes on the body imposes a -2 penalty on all saving throws made during this time; this penalty lasts until the character can rest undisturbed for eight hours.
In addition to the above physical effects, the lunatic induces mental trauma as well. On each of the three nights of the full moon, a half-Vistana character must make a successful madness check (described in Chapter Six) or be overcome with this unusual lunacy. A failed check causes the character to gradually take on the aspects of a beast of the night. A single failed check means that the half-Vistana slips away from his companions to run wild under the stars. A second failed check indicates that the giomorgo also becomes aggressive and even violent during these wild times. Should he fail all three of his madness checks, the character has the mind of a wild, violent savage until the moon changes its phase.

Although human in body, the mind of a half-Vistana is shaped by his unusual heritage. A giomorgo character has his Charisma score reduced by two points because of the enmity with which most other individuals view the Vistani. On the other hand, he receives a +1 bonus to both his Intelligence and Wisdom scores. The latter adjustments reflect the natural advantages of the Vistani mind and the keenness of their sixth sense.

Background:
Pytor Fulcher has the tall lanky build of one accustomed to years of hard labor. The lad tends to dress in bold colorful fashion and is often caught grooming his hair and clothes. His olive complexion matched by thick dark hair which he keeps swept back. His mustache and goatee well trimmed, though by the afternoon heavy stubble is upon his face.

Zanda, the woman who raised him gave him his last name “Fulcher”, always saying that he came to them with the storm. He arrived quite ill and none knew for certain if he would see his first year. The family elders search far and wide for a cure, even turning to the outcast mad crone of the tribe. None would say how Pytor was cured, but his health quickly returned and left no lasting trace of the malady. Zanda would not speak of his mother other than to say that she dead beyond all doubt. A member of a nomadic gypsy tribe in the Sun Kingdom of Genwald, she spent the years teaching Pytor and his cousin the secrets of the Tralak. Zanda forced the boys to take a blood oath to never reveal the secrets of the Tralak runes to another soul, till the end of their days walking upon the world.

He spent much of his youth with his adopted cousin Barsali. The two immensely competitive with each other often brawling and grooming over young maidens, or arguing the outcome of a horse race or some other challenge. Racing horses was indeed their pastime. The only points not contested by the two being that, “Pytor was the stronger while Barsali was quicker”. Neither would allow a slight for the other to go unchallenged, sometimes resulting in one or both taking a beating from several of the other youths.

It wasn’t until his 13th year that the moon began to hold sway upon Pytor’s soul. His sleep non-existent at first, as the years past he began to run wild on the brightest of nights. Loyal Barsali stood watch at his door, sometimes succeeding in halting his flight, other times giving hasty chase till the early hours of the morning.

The tribe traveled long and far over the rolling plains and thick forests of the Sun Kingdom, numerous times the journey bringing them near towns, villages, and even cities. The elders of the tribe always saw to it that all were taught the tongue and local customs to follow before entering. Any caught by the locals for infractions suffered harshly at the hands of the elders, if they were able to gain their release. This was not done out of any respect to the ways of the local inhabitants, but for damaging the tribe’s crafted image.
Pytor’s noticeable strength drew the attention of the tribes blacksmith, who requested the boy be assigned as his apprentice. The following years of tending the forge and anvil further developed his sinewy build till the lad had no trouble carrying a bucket of ingots with each arm.

Zanda and his immediate family have always supported the elders and are looked well upon by the rest of the tribe. However in secret the family elders have been practicing a strange faith paying heed to an unknown mysterious alien power. Recently they have started to betray the trust of the tribe, selectively setting members against each other and stealing from the tribe.
The next night of the full moon was unlike any before. Pytor could feel its approach days before. On the night of its fullest, his mind was filled with dark visions and impossible phantasms. He awoke not upon the plains but in a mist filled forest. Blood was upon his hands and Barsali’s corpse lay nearby, his skull crushed like a melon. Unable to locate the tribe, Pytor buried his cousin as best he could. Eventually finding a trail he has travelled along until coming upon the city he now resides in.
His skill with the forge providing an ample income which he spends each night on cheap shame-filled drink. A straw piled corner of the forge his only bed. The once bold lad now a somber solitary figure. Those attempting to make conversation are greeted with surreal and pessimistic humor. His detachment only interrupted in moments requiring action such as a barmaid being accosted by a drunkard. The barkeep and staff have long since stopped questioning his history, leaving him alone to his drink, while appreciating his protective eye. The barmaids have at least convinced him to renew regular bathing and grooming, preferring the sweat and smell of a week at the forge to not accompany him.
In truth Pytor has considered taking his own life, worried that the chains he has prepared to restrain himself may not be enough. He could flee into the wilderness, but that gives no guarantee that an innocent soul could cross his maddened path. For now he drinks, watches, and waits.

The sheet looks good. As you know, you have some languages to choose from.

A few other things:
-He has a shortbow... did you want arrows? they might be helpful ;) otherwise he can buy some later
-Equaar begin with animal lore and riding proficiencies (which i added)
-you could purchase tracking for 1 nwp slot if you wanted. I'll even rule that this can be taken after character creation so long as you find someone to teach him [two members of the current party have it, so it won't be difficult to find, but his next nwp isn't until lvl 6]

And when you're ready, throw a physical description of your char in the "Cast of Victims" thread

I read over the backstory and it looks pretty good to me :) I don't think anything needs to be changed. I'll drop it into your char sheet and then put up the first game post here

[I think just the final languages are left to choose. I usually don’t exercise this much direction with a character’s thoughts and actions except on the initial post to set the mood. Hope that’s ok.]

Pytor’s arms bore the weariness of a hard day’s work… not unpleasant, in and of itself. Sometimes that sensation bore with it a sense of accomplishment, of pride… but today… today he had bungled piece after piece. He knew why, and he stared at the reason with a baleful eye. Hanging low over the wide plains to the East… Shining in all her mad glory, the silver circle, the white eye of heaven, the Moon… bane of Barsali…

Barsali… he thought grimly.

Shaking his head he drove his thoughts a different way, the tickling rise in the back of his mind that had become so familiar over the last seven years… since his first… The sting of strong drink hit the back of his throat as he took another swig from the clay bottle. Blowing the burning fumes from his nose with a snort, he grimaced. The stuff wasn’t much on flavor, but it got the job done… he vaguely recalled seeing a man clean a cart axle with something that smelled awfully like it.

Pytor steadied himself against the town wall. An acquaintance of his let him walk the ramparts at times, and why not? He had saved the man’s younger sister from some drunk in an alley. She waited tables at the HorseHead, the tavern right next to the smithy where Pytor worked. They’d all come to know him well since he arrived in Thel Jeers… well… as well as anyone here knew him… Thel Jeers… a town much like himself. A place that had lost it’s way, once fine and strong, a hub for the Western Trade, but corrupted… rotting from within, one piece at a time… Another drink, and another burn, and again the creeping shame of it all… but it didn’t matter… not really…. Not anymrore…

He turned his gaze North… rumor had it the Dwarves were rousing, coming back into human lands… maybe he could learn some more advanced smithing from them… but what was the use to that? He stared across the rolling hills around the north wall… mist had crept up in the warm summer eve… odd that… fog didn’t usually come until fall… or spring… His pack lay at his side, and all his gear. He pondered tonight as he had other nights whether this place was where he wanted to be… it certainly wasn’t home… but then… the tribe no longer felt like home… All of the subversive in-fighting and manipulation… he’d hated to leave old Zanda behind, but after Barsali… after that, how could he face her?

Thoughts skittered and leapt about his mind, like sputtering bubbles in a quench-trough. Urges to fight or break something or snatch up the first girl that… or even leap from the edge of the wall and run wild through the forest to the west… West… That’s where he was… where Barsali… Gods, his pulse felt like a hammer in his chest as he fought the wild sensations he new would come…

*thump-thum*

Blood slicked hands shook in horror at the dripping crimson, made black by the wan glow of moonlight…

*Thump-thump*

The face of his kinsman stared up at him, eyes accusing, head… misshapen from the blow that had ended his life…

*THRUM-Thump*

Limbs and leaves whipped at his body as he fled through the trees, lashing him and scoring his arms and chest and face savagely as he ran; refusing to avoid them… they were whipping him for what he’d done…

Catching himself abruptly against the wall Pytor shook his head to clear it from visions and drink and wild thoughts. The madness was coming on… sometimes he fought it and won, sometimes not… but of late it had seemed so much harder to…

RRRRAAAAAAAOOOHHH!…

A cry of pure rage and anguish split the night outside the grey walls, as if a soul had been rent from the depths of the underworld and cast burning into the darkness. Squinting the blacksmith peered in the direction from which it had issued; silver-white moon illuminating the fog over the land with an eerie glow.

HHAAAAAOOOOOOOooooo it cried out again, echoing oddly in the damp.

A chill shot through his spine as an odd red glow emerged from the wood to the west, like a pinprick of light.

[The rest of the group has a bit to do before we get to where you’ll be able to meet up with them, but that’ll give us time to get Pytor into Ravenloft proper in style ;) ]

Pytor leaves his troubled thoughts behind as he quickly makes his well to the nearest alarm bell. Ringing it ferociously while shouting. "To the west! Something is happening to the west!" A gnawing tightness builds in his chest as he descends the wall. Pytor snatches the tethered reins of a nearby mare and springs upon her back. 'Yawhh!" Quickly bringing the steed to a sprint with a skilled push to her sides, Pytor barrels towards the city gate. "Make way! Make way!" Ducking low he urges the horse thru the smaller side opening and turns westward with a gallop. His knuckles clench white to the reins, as a feeling of unease takes him.

DING-DIIIING! DING-DIIIING! DING-DIIIING!
The alarm bell cuts through the relative peace of the night. A shout comes from within the covered parapet. Hargett, his guardsman friend, comes rushing out, Shit! What is it? Did you have too much or is there actually...

HHAAAAAOOOOOOOooooo! the cry interrupts him.

Face grim, the guardsman looks out into the night, squinting towards the light. What in the lower planes... Hey! Where are you going?! He calls out as Pytor rushes down the stone stairs. With a bound the former-gypsy leaps atop the dapple horse tacked nearby for messengers. With a whip of his wrist he unloops the quick-tie with expert skill.

The rookie at the gate, Pytor couldn't even remember his name at the moment, gives a start as he spots the horse barreling towards him! Shocked and surprised, he obeys, unlatching the small man-door and swinging it wide just as the charging horseman reaches him. Pytor drops low against the horse's back, barely clearing the narrow opening into the warm night outside the walls. Vaguely he hears Hargett's voice behind, What the hells are you doing! Shut the damn gate!

Charging into the relative darkness, he drives the young equine from the leveled area around town to the rolling hills. The first dip takes him fully into the fog, cutting his vision sharply to a distance of no more than a dozen feet and sending a chill through him as if he had slipped into a pool of icy water.

The next rise peaks barely above the surface of the mists, his goal once again in-view for a brief moment as the forest and strange light leapt closer... Onward he drove, down into the cold cloudy sea of precipitation, another crest, this time his head and shoulders barely breaking above the surface that rippled and eddied like water.

Still quite some distance away, the figure began to take shape... like that of a man, shambling steadily forward.

[the figure is at least a couple hundred yards away still, but the horse could get him there in no-time]

"Easy girl!" Pytor slows the steed to a fast trot as the abnormal fog hinders his sight. The muffled sounds of the town receding behind him. "That man ahead... the way he walks... is he injured?" The blacksmith guides the horse onward towards the figure while giving shout. "You there! What has happened? Are you injured, man?"

The figure continues to shamble forward in the dim, a wail of pain and fury rolling out of him; fog threatening to engulf them both as he continues at a slower pace]

[The figure moves as if badly injured. how close is Pytor getting?]

"By the Nine Hells man! Speak! Are you injured?" Pytor urges the mare faster as he witnesses the fogs encroachment.

[Going with the assumption that Pytor has never encountered anything remotely unnatural and being a good-hearted soul, he would try to approach and render aid. He would approach at least until given a reason not to. Also, he would speed up in the patches where he has better visibility.]

[Well... he's never encountered anything remotely like this at least...]

The horsemen presses his mount harder as the fog encroaches. Entering the final bank of mist before the figure he slows the animal to a trot. The chill cloud of obfuscation rolls past him, trailing a fine ribbon behind and leaving the cold of death in his bones. A shock of ice lances through his spine and the dapple mare sidesteps nervously as he finally gets a good look at the man...

Once bright and festive gypsy clothes hang soiled and tattered now, stained with earth and blood... The man, once young and full of life, struggles forward on less than steady legs; pale light of the moon casting a horrid pallor on his skin. Hair matted with dried blood sticks tightly to his head... a head tilted down towards the ground... a head misshapen from a prodigious blow...

Pytor's eye catches sight of a sash, much like that worn by his tribe... exactly like... Barsali?

The figure lifts it's head slowly, eyes burning with an unnatural glow. Like the very image of his nightmare the visage of hatred, anger and pain glares at him with an otherworldy intensity.

"Damn this mist! I can't see anything! Where are you, man?" He trots along till once the more catching sight of the form through the chill vapors.

"No!" Screaming at the sight of his cousin's form, Pytor pulls the reins hard to the side and spurs the horse around. "Back! Back towards the city." is all that he can think. Frantically he flees away from the source of both his shame and fear, urging the horse on faster, and faster through the heavy mists.

The former gypsy wheels his mount around, galloping off into the mist at the sight of the undead kinsman; murdered by his own hand. Blessedly the mist hides his face from the night, the damp air wetting his face like tears of the sky. The horrid wailing chases him through the foggy night, eerily illuminated by refractive glows from the silvery orb; mocking his moon-borne madness.

Shaking off the assault on his mind momentarily, Pytor does his best to steer the mare back towards the city. The dapple responds quickly, keeping pace under his expert hand, obviously a well-trained mount. The dull clop-clop-clop of hooves on the earth echoes mutely in the moist air. Soon the terrain changes to a much flatter, harder earth... not at all what he was expecting... The stony ground hardly resembles the area near the city, and shrubs and scrub brush become common...

Was it possible he'd gotten turned around? Could he be near the forest now? Trees and bushes soon take the place of brush, but the evergreens are not common to the Oakwood... and there was the distance... Something was most certainly wrong... The all-consuming fog taunts him relentlessly, hiding the stars and moon, his only nocturnal guidance, from eyes heavy with drink and weariness... On he moves, into the night, turning here or there or backtracking to find only more trees and stony earth...
...
..
.

What must have been an hour passes before the mist finally peels back enough to see the trees around him better... a sinking feeling comes over the blacksmith as he realizes that he is unquestionably lost...

Off in the woods to one side he sees the haze of an orange glow, much like that made by a campfire. In the distance he hears another lonesome wail; thankfully this time the howl of hunting wolves and not... something else...

Shaking with weariness, Pytor slips down from the hard ridden steed... Collapsing to the ground he vomits the remnants of the evening's drink... "Am I going mad? Was that actually Barsali or just the nightmarish fantasy of a lunatic?" After several minutes he climbs to his feet and takes hold of the reins. "Come on girl." Pytor begins walking out the mare, heading in the direction of the orange glow. He stops only if they come upon a water source suitable for drinking.
