Lord Torath (Private thread) Labyrinth of Madness

A classic 2e Puzzle dungeon for High Level characters
Beware, this one is substantially longer and (IMHO) even harder than the legendary Tomb of Horrors!

Here you go:
D20 because Tristan asked: [1d20]=4
Here's hoping that's a good roll...

In other news, since everyone else is going to be down until at least noon, Steven's going to start work on Landro's gem:
(This is just copy-pasted from above)
~ 05:30
Intensify roll (Wis-3=17):[1d20]=8 – 25 PSPs + 1/round – Wis to 25, Int to 14, Con to 11
Step 1: Daily Preparation
Empower Preparation roll (Wis-12+1=14):[1d20]=3 – 50 PSPs

Step 2: Psychoportation access
Empower Discipline Access roll (Wis-12+1=14): [1d20]=14 - 100 PSPs
End Intensify – 2 rounds maintenance = 2 PSPs
PSPs spent: 177 (93/260)

Rest/Meditate for 2 hours 25 minutes (08:00) to recover 58 PSPs (148/260).

Sounds good.

During the current time/ conversation with Lena at appx 8:05am on the 5th of Reaping, Steve senses that he is being directly observed by some remote power

====
Sensitivity to Observation pass!

His Wis pow score is 20 but a 20 always fails on these, so we'll say a 19 activates his 'power score' effect if that is ok with you.

Right. If his power score is 20+, a 20 is a regular failure and a 19 is a Power Score result (see The Will and the Way p65 under "Power Score:").
The Will and the Way p69 wrote:A successful power check does not reveal the location of the watcher; it merely confirms the character's suspicion that he is being observed. If the observer is using clairvoyance or clairaudience to monitor the psionicist, the psionicist may attempt to obscure the watcher's scrying by winning a psychic contest against his watcher. If successful, the watcher cannot scry against the psionicist for 1d4 hours.
Per the description, Stephen would like to initiate a psychic contest to block the observer. We both roll a d20, and the highest successful result wins. If the other guy's not using psionics, probably use his level or HD or something for his power score.

Psychic Contest Check <19: 17

Edit: Times like this, I really miss my Amulet of Proof Against Detection and Location.

Ah, I didn't realize the '19 power score' was a codified rule (I don't allow psionics often so never had someone with a power score of 20, lol)

Psychic Contest!!! [1d20]=3

Well they definitely passed but you also rolled much higher so they will be obstructed for the next 1d4 (secret dm roll) hours!

Feel free to emote this contest in the main thread (or even keep it secret from the others if you wish ;) )

About 08:05:
Contact Roll on Jag (power score: 19): [1d20]=6 - 13 PSPs + 10 to maintain for 10 rounds.
Psychic Surgery Roll – Contact (power score: 15): [1d20]=6 - 10 PSPs
Mindlink Roll (power score: 16): [1d20]=14 - 8 PSPs/round for eleven rounds => 88 PSPs
Psychic Surgery Roll - Mindlink (power score: 15): [1d20]=10 - 10 PSPs
Total cost of 23+88+20 = 131 (17/260) PSPs finishing about 08:30

Meditating from 08:30 to 12:00 = 3.5 hours = 84 PSPs (101/260)

Correct! Unless something else comes up. He's now mindlinked to all the PCs except Axid and to Lena, Jack, and Landro. Allikhain is the lone hold-out.

I'm keeping track of it in the 2nd post in this thread under the Class section. He's currently at 39/260 and has not yet touched his receptacle. Though I expect that won't last.

I'm tracking expenditures under the experience section.

Thanks.

Also, I had forgotten Stephen needs the 1st sigil. We can just say he opened the dimension door near it and collected the sigil before the group came to the 'blood bubble room. Otherwise he would be unable to enter it even with dimension door or teleportation.

Oh. I was planning on having him not get the sigils. Any of them. That's why I described him as seeing Ke'Sha and Co. walk through the wall.
Lord Torath wrote: Sun Aug 03, 2025 12:30 pmStephen looks on in growing alarm as Ke'Sha leads his parade of undead out of the wall.
That's also why I waited four days for you to handle his first Wormhole letting Jag & Co get easily out of the Hands room and back to the camp. And then after I described it, again gave you the opportunity to ask me to change things. I figured you were okay with him not having the sigil.

It was an oversight on my part, probably from being distracted with all of the other in-depth discussions going on at the time.

He has to have it to be in this room. The module is pretty clear and basically says that certain items and locations "... simply do not exist for those without the proper sigils."

Essentially there is no bypassing it as it is a major part of the module that many elements of the adventure depend on.

So even bashing down the wall between the two rooms wouldn't have worked? We've got Disintegrate, Detonate, and 2-dimensional blades all capable of demolishing dungeon walls.

I'm filled with the sinking feeling that the sigils are going to have a destabilizing effect on Stephen's sanity (Labyrinth of Madness) and was hoping to be able to keep at least one member of the party sigil-free, even if it might limit the things he can see relative to the rest of the party. I mean, that's what Sight Link is for.

Ah well. So much for vain hopes. He'll take the tattoo.
