Return [To Madness]: Act 1, Scene 2

A classic 2e Puzzle dungeon for High Level characters
Beware, this one is substantially longer and (IMHO) even harder than the legendary Tomb of Horrors!

I agree with our Athasian ally. Do we have reason to believe the things in the pit below it are important and not just the random trash of the last unfortunate soul to have failed to find the hazard too late? Allikhain muses. Though I am not opposed to exploring the dead end beyond.

Probably easiest to just use the teleport dirt.

So is the top of the gelatinous cube 20 feet below the floor? Or 30 feet?

[Ooc]
Pit is 30 ft deep eith cube in center, so floor to top of cube is 10 ft. Bottom of cube to pit floor with spikes is 10 ft.

"I think I have an easy solution, as long as we can do damage from range. I can create a Bigby's Interposing Hand between the top of the hole and the Ooze. Which should allow us to pelt it to death." Jag will broadcast.

"We could then pick through the leavings, to find anything valuable." Jack grins. Mostly because the plan does not involve him stabbing the thing directly.

Axid tries once:[1d20]=19
Twice:[1d20]=16
Three times:[1d20]=13
To cast Disintegrate on the cube. His ire raising at each attempt. He begins to wonder if this place has an effect on his abilities. In the end he is satisfied that the mind can overcome obstacles. Eight cubic feet, center mass, vanishes from the cube.(80 psp)
You are talkin' to the holy symbol wearing,
Ruby ring wearing, kiss stealing; Woo!
Praying/healing, beholder riding, griffin flying
Son of a blowgun, and I'm having a hard time holding these Aboleth shoes down! WOO!

[OoC]Eight cubic feet out of a thousand (assuming a 10'x10x'10' cube)... Not a huge amount.

Is disintegrate going to destroy just the cube, leaving the stuff inside it intact? Will Axid have enough PSPs to "Telekinesis" the gear up to us after the cube is dead?

Also, is the cube resting on the spikes? Hovering over them?

Fun fact: assuming a gelatinous cube is roughly as dense as water (like most living things are) it weighs around 64,000 lbs (29,000 kg)!

Pretty sure this means 10 feet off the floor, with the spikes between it and the floor."

If Jag knows Axid did this, he will go through the dirt portal and cast Bigby's Interposing Hand, naming the cube, and making it take up half the hole, so the group can shoot around either side of it.

Ke'Sha looks critically at the living fighting the Jellow. You can't animate that thing... or can you? He ponders... As long as there is no immediate danger he let his minions gather around him, the juju zombies have their swords ready. (and if there is a portal to the other side of the pit, he and the minions will move there.)

[Since the Psionic version of Disintegrate only removes about 0.8% of the cube, I don't think killing it outright works for something that is basically a homogeneous blob the same way it would for a humanoid or animal. I rolled some damage for the effect, and it actually rolled pretty high so the cube is still pretty messed up after it.]

Axid moves through the teleportation soil and into the hallway, followed curiously by Allikhain. forward and concentrates, struggling to focus his mind in this maddening place... insidious whispers just on the edge of his mind distract and deflect the Dwarf's efforts... or were those the edge of his own ephemeral thoughts... Finally focusing he presses his will upon the wiggling clear monstrous mucus-like mass. In an instant a section from the center is disintegrated, and the creature quivers in reaction; quaking as if dealt a terrible blow...

Allikhain nods, Well struck, Axid. It seems quite damaged and should be simple to finish off. In response to your question, Stephen, I do believe their digestive juices retain some of their acidic properties for a time after death, but that it is fairly short lived. On the order of minutes rather than hours, if I recall correctly.

Jag begins casting, pulling a small soft glove from one of the many pouches on his girdle. The tusked Elf evokes a powerful spell, and a shimmering gossamer hand long enough to span the pit appears, hovering between it's maker and the creature below.

[For the sake of expediency, I'll just presume everyone is aware of the goings on regardless of their current position via the mental links and such]
====
Gel cube save vs Death [1d20]=1
Utter Failure
8 cubic meters of the Gelatinous Cube is disintegrated
Disintegrate dmg for cube [3d8]=19
The Gelatinous Cube is Hurt Badly!

Jag casts, Bigby's Interposing Hand on the Gelatinous Cube.
It will last for 12 rounds
