Liri moves a little closer to Kutz, darts ready, but continues to scan "her" sector to see if more of these creatures appear.

Angel stays silent, staring into the distance, (obviously not seeing anything!) after a few moments she whispers to Elias.
"What do you see?" At that very moment he lets hit arrow fly. Angel adopts a fighting stance, sword in front of her.

Kutz brings his arrow to bear on the 'thing' ... he cannot really make out what it is ... or exactly where it is ... maybe if it makes a mistake / and then Elias' arrow sings / and Kutz comes to even fuller alert waiting for the thing's reaction to the arrow ...

go on, you know you want to look to see what happened to your partner ... go on ...

[OOC] Here's the map I promised (click the thumbnail for a larger view:

Forest Encounter
Image

Letters correspond to the names of the characters. I took the liberty of showing their locations as I believe you described them.

The "X" in the northeast is Elias' target. The "?" in the west is what Kutz and Liri have spotted. The red thing in the center is the fire. [/OOC]

=========================================================

Elias' shot comes very close to hitting the creature, but is deflected by a hanging branch and goes wide. The creature jerks its head towards the sound, then back at Elias as he snatches another arrow from his quiver. It lets out a sharp angry hiss, almost like a cat, drops back down on all fours, and speeds deeper into the woods.

=========================================================

At the sound from the opposite side of the encampment, the creature that Kutz and Liri are watching tenses up and then flattens into the underbrush.

=========================================================

[OOC] Dice rolls from everyone, please. Initiative (d10) and to-hit (d20) and damage (dX) rolls you intend to attack. If you have multiple attacks, post both, please. [/OOC]

In rapid succession, Liri lets loose the three darts she prepared.

(ooc: I use -4 to attack because Liri can't really see the creature)

1d10=2, 1d20-4=6, 1d3=2, 1d10=10, 1d20-4=-3, 1d3=3, 1d10=1, 1d20-4=1, 1d3=3

(ooc: OMG, I never have much luck with the dice, but this haul is particularly useless!!!)

Angel stands her ground, sword raised, she will attack anyone who gets to close, if she has to.

[OOC] Jenn - Looks like you used commas instead of semicolons to separate your dice rolls on invisiblecastle. That's why you have two results for each roll.
When you're rolling initiative, to-hit and damage, the input should look like this: 1d10;1d20;1d8
Also if anyone is specialized or is using a bow or for some other reason gets multiple attacks in a round, the rolls have to be entered separately - you can't ask for 2d20;2d8 or it will add them together. You have to enter it as 1d20;1d8;1d20;1d8 to get separate rolls. [/OOC]

(The rolls are with her pluses, I rolled 1d20+2 for Attack, and 1d8+3 for damage, forgot init:
1d10+1 1d10+1=6

Just realised Init in 2e is less is more, that should be 1d10-1 = 5-1 = 4)

Bastian bows his head, eyes closed, and begins chanting to himself blessing the non-combatants; Fraso, Salia, and Hiric. Without raising his head, he waves a hand across the three.

((OOC: not sure if Hiric is with them, though I presume that he would not stray far from his sister at this time.))

[OOC] I knew I was forgetting someone when I put all the initials on the map. I left Maughus off on purpose, because he is ranging around (after all, he is a ranger). Hiric is sticking nearby the wagon.

And by the way, this is what Elias' bogey looks like (click the thumbnail for a larger version):

1d10 = 2 1d20 = 14

Elias tries to track the creature through the underbrush in order to take another shot. (If he loses sight of it, he'll scan the surrounding area for any closer enemies.

Not knowing if her shots had hit or missed, Liri takes out another three of her darts, prepared to fire them at anything that moves (except her comrades, of course).

Kutz thinks he has a reasonable shot and takes 2 in quick succession ...

1d10=8, 1d20=11, 1d6=5, 1d20=5, 1d6=4

... unfortunately, he thinks he totally rushed the 2nd shot.

OOC/ not sure if I get 1 or 2 ... ignore the 2nd if I don't. Scale the damage if my memory (ie d6) of arrow damage is off. Its been too long since I've played D&D to recall these things accurately. Btw, work is super busy so I might be a cardboard cut out for a while.

[OOC]Thanks for the heads-up, Ruff. Do me a favor, please, and shoot me a PM with a general idea of what Kutz will do in combat and after, so I can move things along if you are out of touch. [/OOC]

=================================================================

Liri's darts fall short of her target, but come close enough to convince it that it is in danger. It springs up and begins loping off into the woods on its hands and feet.

As the creature rises, Kutz looses his first shot. The arrow knocks the creature into a tree, but it rebounds and continues running.

==================================================================

Moving quickly through the underbrush, Elias attempts to close on the creature, drawing and shooting on fly. Shooting through moderate woods at a moving target is difficult, but he does manage to hit his mark. The creature stumbles from the impact of the arrow in its back, letting out a wail of pain or perhaps of frustration, but quickly recovers and continues its flight. It is still moving quickly despite its injury, and Elias is hard-pressed to keep up.

As Elias passes the spot where the creature was struck, he sees a small spatter of blood, then another further on, the start of a clear blood trail that any ranger could follow.

===================================================================

Maughus moves out of the woods and into the light of the campfire and begins kicking dirt onto the campfire. "That was recon, I think. Main attack will come later. If they follow S.O.P. we can expect a main body of heavy infantry with light cavalry on the wings. But these woods will make it tough even for light cavalry." With that, he turns and shouts into the woods: "You hear that?! Your horses are useless!"
