"Well, I need to check on my family," Kendra says as she makes her exit from the shop. "And it might be a good idea to get a drink somewhere," she adds to herself as she starts her trek home.

Darga stares, open-mouthed, at the elf's demonstration of the staff, but holds back from saying that he could use it. Would his companions really give him such a wondrous treasure? Perhaps tomorrow or the next day, he'll offer to buy it...

After taking a coin or two from it, Darga tucks the share of money that Kynaston gives to him into his backpack, burying it deeply under his other possessions. "T'morrow, then," he agrees. Heading out into the cold and wet, he heads towards the Steel Tankard, hoping to find a place to sleep for the night.

Haahqae lingers in the magic shop for a bit, searching though the merchandise before retiring to his room at the steel tankard. There, he'll do a performance when necessary, but mostly he'll hide in his room and "read his new book" in private.

Gregeddin dumps the coin into his pack
"Aye Tomorrow, here, morning" Gregeddin bids farewell to the others.

He picks up some ingredients for dinner for the family, some bread that has begun to harden in the afternoon, beans, offal and leafy greens, and heads over to the seven centaurs inn. He plays music to the horses in the stables there while he waits for his parents to finish working. He was looking forward to a hearty stew and the company of home.

Kynaston Trench
Kynaston bids farewell to the others and heads home. He spends the rest of the evening cleaning up the mess the looters made. With the money he made today, he could reacquire everything he lost. This does little to quell his frustration at having failed to protect the red haired mage.

He tucks the chest under his bed for safekeeping; no sense in carrying that much coin on him. Then he eats dinner and goes to bed, dreaming dreams of torment and anxiety.

(End scene.)

Kendra Synclair
Kendra walks home, her pack heavy with steel and copper coins, as well as a new sword and a potion.

"An elven blade," Raetmal had said to her. "Qualinesti. A hundred years old, if not older. It belonged to a elven wizard--a White Robe--who decided to trade it to me after he took his Test. If it has a name, he never told me what it was. See the elven script written upon the blade? Roughly, it translates to, 'Never raise me in anger or for selfish reasons.' An old elven philosophy. May it serve you well."

Indeed, when Kendra hefted the blade, she could feel the power within it. It was light as a feather, and felt like an immediate extension of her own arm; like an old sword she had used for years.

The potion was rather interesting, as well. Raetmal had explained that if she were to drink it, her warrior's skill and prowess with the blade would temporarily increase. "You won't become faster or stronger," Raetmal had told her. "But your senses will sharpen. Your reaction times will increase. You will fight as if you were a veteran swordswoman."

When Kendra arrives home, she steps inside to find her family just sitting down to dinner. They are all shocked and relieved to see her, and in a flash, everyone is out of their seats to crowd around her.

"You're wounded!" her mother cries, dragging her inside. "Here, let me see, take off this armor."

"The Abyss happened?" her father asked. "There was a riot, people were killed, but nobody seemed to know where you were--the Holy Guard, and even Norris came by looking for you."

Darga
Darga kept silent, and as a result the strange Staff-Spear was traded away. But in return, he received a lesser staff. Magical, but unable to change shape. "Ironwood from Solace," Raetmal had told him as he handed the dwarf the new staff. "As hard and durable as steel. It belonged to a traveling monk, who decided to give it to me after he took a vow of peace and swore off all violence."

The staff felt stronger than his old one--harder, lighter, more balanced. Magic had always eluded his people in the past. It was strange to be holding a genuine magical weapon in his hands.

With the new weapon in hand, he heads back to the Steel Tankard. The place is crammed with people, mostly refugees, as usual. He finds a waitress to ask for a place to sleep. "No rooms left," she says to him. "But for a copper, you can sleep on the floor in the common room after last call."

Haahqae
Haahqae lingers after the others leave. Once they are gone, he sits down with Raetmal to discuss further business. It costs most of the money he just made, but he walks out of the shop with two potions in his pack. They were certain to prove useful later on.

When he arrives at the Steel Tankard, the innkeeper--whose name he still couldn't recall--approaches him. "Hey, you! You never showed yesterday." He snorts, then spits in a nearby spittoon. "So I gave your room away to someone with actual coin. Paid me six silver for it, she did!"

Gregeddin
Gregeddin walks home with four blades on his belt now. He would appear rather intimidating, if not for the fact that they kept clashing into each other with every step.

The newest sword was by far the most beautiful one. "Solamnic," Raetmal had told him. "The widow to a knight sold it to me when she moved here, trying to start over with a new life."

It was an excellent blade, the bard could tell. It was lighter and more balanced than a normal broad sword. It was also showy and expensive looking, which would help make him appear more respectable, most likely.

He purchases a few ingredients for a handful of copper on his way home. Then plays music in the stables of the Seven Centaurs until his parents are finished working.

=============

Kynaston's encumbrance lessens from moderate to light.
Gregeddin spends 5 copper pieces.

Darga nods at the waitress's words and fishes out a steel coin. "Th' floor'll be just fine. I think that that'll pay fer me ta stay here fer a while, though, an' pay fer something ta eat and ta drink too."

With the waitress's approval, he makes his way through the crowd until he finds a place for himself, and busies himself by starting to whittle at the staff that the elf gave to him. While he can tell that it is a fine piece of work, he sets about correcting the fact that it is plain and unadorned by scratching in the patterns for future carvings and totems. But his work is only half-focused--he makes sure to keep his ears open for the conversations of those around him. With so many people in the tavern, he imagines that at least a few are likely to know of the Master's cult, and if so, that the alcohol and camaraderie here might loosen their tongues. And if he can't overhear any gossip about the cult, maybe he can learn something else useful.

"I was out of the city," Kendra says as she removes her armor for her mother. "There was a man that needed some help cleaning out his mine, so I helped." It was really the simplest way to explain the situation. "And as a result, I made more money than I would have ever made working for the Seekers."

The innkeep's name is just on the edge of Haahqae's tongue, but he can't quite put it into words. Instead he finally replies "I'm terribly sorry, helping the locals here took a little longer then I expected, and was more profitable. Would a steel be proper recompense for the inconvenience? I brought a book back with me that I was hoping to read, but if you want I can put on an extra show today to make up for yesterdays. Why yes, that should be fine." And then he fishes out a steel from his coin purse to hand to the inn keeper.

"Maybe tomorrow you can help me help out a few more locals. No, on second thought I imagine you'll have to stay here and make sure everyone gets a bed and bread and whatnot."

When his parents emerge, he greets them warmly, "Hello again, been busy, how are things? I'm also starving, let's go home and eat."

He was rather excited to regale the tales of magic and intrigue to his parents, though would prefer to gloss over the killing business, and show the new things he had acquired.

Darga
The waitress is most impressed with being handed a steel piece. "Right away, sir!" she says, and hurries off to bring the dwarf his food and drink.

While whittling the magic staff, the waitress returns with a plate with steak and potatoes and a mug of their finest ale for him. "If you be needin' anything else, just be askin', sir," she says.

He also eavesdrops on those around him. He hears an elderly couple discussing the weather, worrying how harsh the upcoming winter might be. He overhears a small group talking about strange men in robes with bandaged hands asking everyone about a blue crystal staff that had apparently gone missing. And he hears a family talking about the Master, as well.

"Papa, is it true that the Master will make everything better now?" asks a small child.

"Yes, my son. Our luck will finally turn around, as long as we believe and have faith in his power," the father answers.

Kendra Synclair
"Clear it out? Of what? Ore?" asks her father.

"By the Seeker gods!" cries her mother once she sees her wounds. "Kendra, you've been stabbed and cut!"

"Wow!" Tristan exclaims. "Did you go on an adventure? And fight monsters and save a princess?" he asks.

Haahqae
The bartender gapes at the steel coin offered. "Cor! I'll go get your room ready right now!" the innkeeper insists, hurrying upstairs.

While he does, Haahqae spots Darga over at a table by himself, whittling his new magic staff and eating a nice steak dinner.

Gregeddin
Once Gregeddin and his parents arrive home, Civilia begins work on dinner, using the ingredients Gregeddin gives her.

"Quite an interesting day, I should say," Rye says. "Although pretty quiet compared to that riot yesterday, I suppose. Still, things are getting out of hand. All these cults spreading, especially that new one that everyone's talking about. Heard the Seekers arrested their leader, and that was what started the riot. But how did your trip go? You look like you took quite a beating!"

"You're right about the arrest being the spark for the riots, what's the perception of the people? Are they in favour of the cultists, or not."
He continues as he opens his bag, "Yes some cleaning work... for a fee." His hand dives into his pack scooping at the steel and letting it trickle back in. "Something called a Kobold got me pretty badly, but its covered up now anyway. The most interesting part was the sight of true magic before my eyes, its power... was just enthralling. It was all so foreign, and curious."

He goes on to describe the different magical acts he saw.

Finally he adds, "Well its good to be back anyhow. Even through the unrest. Cult caught up in elven affairs, of all things, now too apparently. Say, have you noticed any elves up at the inn?"

Darga thanks the waitress when she brings his food. "Many thanks, but I don' think I'll be needin' anything fer a while, Miss...I'm sorry, but I don' think I caught yer name, m'lady?"

As he eats and whittles, Darga listens unobtrusively to those around him. Though the strange robed men asking after a staff sound interesting, he pushes them to the back of his mind when the Master is mentioned. Putting down his knife, he turns to the gathered family, doing his best to appear reluctantly curious. "I'm sorry ta interrupt ya, but I couldn't help but hear. D'ya know of th'Master? I've heard th' stories about him...that he's been lettin' his followers work real miracles." He pauses, feigning shy wariness. "Kin ya tell me...is what I been hearin' true? Is he a real god like they say?"

Gregeddin, 15 Market Street
Gregeddin wrote:"You're right about the arrest being the spark for the riots, what's the perception of the people? Are they in favour of the cultists, or not."
"Many people are being taken in by the cult," Rye says. "More and more keep joining up, I hear. You'd think they would have learned their lesson after the Belzor incident."

"Then again, it's mostly refugees signing up," Civila points out. "They weren't here for that. And they're probably desperate at this point; they've lost their homes, and many loved ones. I guess this Master gives them hope."

Gregeddin himself barely remembers Belzor. He was just a child, around 9, when that cult took hold of the city. By the time he was 12, Belzor had been exposed as a fake and the religion crumbled. That was what led the Seekers to take over the city, as Belzor had been their only real competition.
Gregeddin wrote:"Yes some cleaning work... for a fee." His hand dives into his pack scooping at the steel and letting it trickle back in. "Something called a Kobold got me pretty badly, but its covered up now anyway."
"Kobold? I've heard of those, although I wasn't aware there were any in the area," Rye says.

"Seems you're doing well for yourself then, but please be careful," Civila says. "A mountain of steel does you no good if you're too dead to spend it."
Gregeddin wrote:"Say, have you noticed any elves up at the inn?"
"At the inn? No, can't say we've seen any at all," Rye says. "But then again, I heard the Qualinesti closed their borders recently. Rumor is, they'll shoot to kill anyone who tries to come close to their territory. They've holed up in that forest of theirs and refuse to have anything to do with the outside world. Good riddance, I say."

Civila adds, "There is that strange elf who runs the magic shop. Never been there, or talked to him, though. Rumor is he was banished from his home when he murdered someone. He never comes to the inn, though."

Kendra Synclair, 2723 Crooked Road
"Fighting monsters? Kendra, really, this is going too far! You'll get yourself killed!" Garnet protests.

"Goblins?" her father asks warily. "Damn it, Kendra...that's how I lost my leg. Have you any idea what would happen to this family if you got yourself killed?"

Darga, Steel Tankard Common Room
Darga wrote:"Many thanks, but I don' think I'll be needin' anything fer a while, Miss...I'm sorry, but I don' think I caught yer name, m'lady?"
"Cassandra, sir," she says. She's an older lady, maybe middle aged. She was probably once rather pretty, but harsh living had worn her down. She has brown skin, hair and eyes. An old, nasty scar runs down the right side of her face. Her eyes have bags under them, and she has a rather bleak look to her. "Just give me a hollar if you need anythin'," she adds.

"Aye, it's true, friend," the man says. "I saw the Master's prophet speak a few days go, in the town square. He cut his hand, then prayed to the Master and it healed, right before my eyes. Just like the magic healing of old! They threw him in prison, but he'll be out soon. This is all part of the Master's plan, you see. His people have promised that soon, the refugees will have food and shelter, as long as we believe. Some people have been sent to the promised land, already!"

"Kobolds, a magic using hobgoblin, and some other goblin like creatures," Kendra says to her father. "I got five hundred steel pieces out of this whole ordeal! Do you know how long you guys could survive off of that money? I could nearly buy a new house for all of you. Yes, it is dangerous work, but I have proven I can take care of myself. Of course, none of that really matters considering that I've agreed to marrying Norris."
