WotL OOC Thread

This 2E Dragonlance game is set in the city of Haven, during the War of the Lance. Haven is a city undergoing great upheaval. First massive numbers of refugees pour in, then the city is conquered by a draconic army. Can our heroes survive under this dark occupation?

Well, I admit I have a strong feeling of failure.

Now that it is all done, I'm curious, was there any way to save Raetmal that I failed to see or was this the plan you had for Raetmal? (I recall you said you had plans fo him when he was unconscious)

As far as I understand, if Tulbas would agree to Magnus offer, Magnus still would have killed Raetmal, no?)
I could have waited for your to roll initiative and make an attack, but even if you hit him, remember that he cast Stoneskin on himself back before the fight with the dire wolves? Tulbas would have had to stab him numerous times just to break through the spell, so he really had no chance of beating him.

Was it possible to save Raetmal? I don't want to say no outright, but I had tried to arrange things so it likely wouldn't happen. I had decided to kill Raetmal off the very moment Tulbas started asking him for free magical items. I realized right away that was going to be a big problem. I also realized that even once Magnus took over the mageware shop, the party would likely rely on Raetmal way too much for things. "Can I get a free teleport? Can I have some new spells for free? Can you come with us on this dangerous mission?" And it's not like Raetmal could argue, especially if they broke out the 'but the fate of the city depends on it!' argument.

So, yeah. Raetmal was pretty much doomed. I asked you for your plans on what to do if you got Raetmal out of there. I can't explain why just now, due to spoilers, but every suggestion you gave was also doomed to fail for one reason or another. So I figured it would be faster and easier to just kill him now.

Well, I also saw the problem with asking Raetmal's for free items. That's why I didn't ask for anything but an item that would give only a minor edge that fits solving the problem at hand.
Tulbas didn't ask for braces of defense of magical dagger. No wand of magic missiles or robe of invisibility even that as you have said Raetmal couldn't argue with Tulbas safety.
The only item he asked was to help with finding a wizard and he used only one charge of the wand of detect magic.
Raetmal was a mentor and it was a good way to discuss ideas regarding the problems in hand with you, the DM, similar to talking with other NPCs to get information such as Nora or the Council.

Anyway, I still think I could have saved him, but only if I changed Tulbas action long before the last session with Magnus.
Before joining the group, Tulbas suspected Magnus wishes ill to Raetmal and didn't want to leave him unguarded, but even then he couldn't be moved. Maybe if Tulbas wouldn't provoke Darewind and would hire few people from the city to get Raetmal to hiding or to contact with another wizard to protect Raetmal he could be saved, but I didn't see that far what is coming. Now he will have to live with this burden on his chest and it will probably change his character forever.
Hope I'll never do such grievous mistakes in real life.

That's not entirely true. The night of the fight with the Ergothians, Tulbas went to see Raetmal to ask him for a "scroll to help" in the battle. That was when I first had Raetmal disappear, to prevent that from happening.

Then before the giant battle, Tulbas wanted to add new spells to his spellbook for the upcoming fight. I had to make sure and explain a few times that all of the magical swag was locked up in the back, where Tulbas couldn't get to it.

So yeah, it was more than just a Wand of Detection that he was after.

Yeah, I never understood what the party was doing with the cult. Tulbas, Gregeddin and Haahqae kept saying stuff about how they were infiltrating the cult, to earn their trust and hopefully exert influence over their actions. And Tulbas, especially, had done a pretty good job at that. He had Nora's respect and admiration, and she's second in command. But then he threw it all away to confront Darewind like that, and both Haahqae and Gregeddin seemed to go out of their way to piss Darewind off whenever they could. That seemed to undermine everything they were trying to accomplish.

I see you point regarding the magical items. About adding spells to the book, I just thought that for his 19 INT score he should have more spells in the spellbook.
Still, I tried to consider carefully what to ask and not to break the balance of AD&D adventuring.

Regarding Darewind, well Tulbas was suspicious, but he really wanted Darewind to be a true priest so he would heal Raetmal. Therefore he looked for a proof, and Darewind actions only proved the opposite, so carried by emotions he let his opinions be heard.

Obviously it could be done better. Raetmal is dead, Haven can't protect itself. The Red army is at the gates...

I'd put Gregeddin's motives down with the whims and fancies of a bard. It seemed interesting enough at the time, just like the fake elixir people, but perhaps not having full foresight of what consequences his actions may have, and being open to pretty much anything as a True neutral.

And so ends Arc 1, "The Decline of Haven." Now for Arc 2, "The Occupation of Haven."

Sorry about that last post. It's really long and pretty cutscene-y. I wasn't intending to do it like that at first, but despite my efforts to usher you all into the marketsquare, you all kept trying to leave it. And then would have missed everything. So I decided not to give you the chance to and just kind of filibuster you all. To be fair, though, it's not like there's anything you really could have done, save throw your lives away by charging Verminaard or simply leaving and not getting to see what is happening.

Despite the recent railroading, though, I hope you all enjoyed this arc and are as excited as me as to what is to come next. Those of you who have read the books were probably already aware this was going to happen.

So what happens now? I'm going to calculate XP and all that and we're going to skip ahead a bit. Not much, just long enough to get everyone back up to full health. We'll open the game up with the party having just finished catching everyone up on what happened to Kendra at her place. Arulia will be there to watch over her, so she'll be present, as well. Then the party can decide what to do next.

I'll also post updates on what happens to the city during those few days. You can reply with how your character would respond to these events. As you can imagine, there will be quite a few changes to the city's laws. And everything else, for that matter. The Seekers and Cultists of the Master have disbanded and the army occupies the city. The old hobgoblin was right. "Everything will change."

If you had railroaded us all to the market and hadn't railroaded us when we were there, there's a pretty good chance Haahqae's usual tricks would have killed him.

The arc was nice, although Haahqae got almost nothing done, that's kind of due to his failure of executing his plan very effectively. Or really a failure in making a very effective plan in the first place. This is probably why he's been wandering the world for a while and hasn't accomplished anything significant yet.

Haahqae, once he has time to sleep and think, will probably remember that he's gravely and horrendously wounded and that he should stay in bed and rest until it heals (I'm pretty sure Reana dealt the first damage to Haahqae in the campaign ever, I don't think he'd take it very well, despite his fearlessness and bold words).

Haahqae might be a bit puzzled on not all of his questions being answered. He might ask a few more just in case the hobgoblin was off on his wealth of knowledge by a few days.

Meanwhile, we got some new dragon overlords who know about the gods, better start pestering... err umm, politely asking them about it.

That's a fair point. Then again, to get close to Verminaard, he'd have to enter the dragon's dragonfear aura. Perhaps that would have been enough to keep him at bay? But he might have made his save, knowing my luck.

There was a lot of meandering about among the whole party, really. But Haahqae did land the party two of their jobs--the mines and the giant. So without him, it's possible they never would have found or taken those jobs. So that's something.

Besides, Haahqae has some pretty...lofty goals. I really doubt he could have made much headway in them at level 2 even if he had been more focused.

Not knowing the story this was pretty awesome for a cutscene. I don't mind the railroad. It gives me a chance to role play Gregeddin in a new Set of circumstances and see if the recent events have changeschanged his personality.

As for Gregeddin s activities during the next few days, checking up on zoya and mateo to fulfil his promises of payment. Checking up on Tulbas Darga and Kendra yo find out what happened to them. And paying Haahqae a visit for some light entertainment while he rests. If he needs performances to cover his rent in the steel tankard, Gregeddin would likely offer to cover for him with music or tales and songs.
It will be nice to walk the city without darewind on their backs, but I wonder how the new overlords treat the citizens and us.

I'm relieved. I was worried there might be some ill will after that. Players often don't like to be made to feel weak or helpless, and that was what that whole scene was about.

In other news, if you remember this post I made back in February, I said I was tallying up points based on character's behavior to determine which deity they would be most suited for. I said if you managed to get 5 points in a Good or Evil deity, or 10 points in a Neutral one, that particular god would reach out to your character.

So far, nobody has managed to get to that point. But I thought I'd share some of my findings.

Haahqae is so far, kind of all over the place. He has no clear majority, but rather has accumulated 1 or 2 points in half a dozen different gods. In terms of alignment, you put down Chaotic Neutral. That is pretty much was what I came up with, as well.

Kendra, on the other hand, has been quite consistent. Of the 5 points she has earned so far, 4 have been for Shinare, the LN goddess of commerce, contracts and industry. She needs 6 more points in Shinare before they are fully aligned. For alignment, you put down Neutral Good. But her behavior so far has struck me as overwhelmingly Lawful Neutral so far. She seems far more interested in duty and obligation than actually helping people.

Gregeddin is a lot like Haahqae, in that he's kind of all over the place with 6 points in 5 different gods. He does have a slight majority (very slight; only 2 points) in Hiddukel, the CE god of betrayal, deception and greed. Although labeled True Neutral, he does seem to be leaning ever so slightly toward Neutral Evil. Not enough for an alignment change, but worth noting.

Tulbas is actually the one closest to divine attuning here. But probably not for who you would expect. Of the 8 points he's acquired, half of them are in Paladine, the LG god of redemption, virtue and leadership. One more point and he's made contact, in fact. Although labeled True Neutral, Tulbas has been acting rather Lawful Good, especially more recently. He seems overly concerned with helping people and doing the right thing. When he does something bad (or simply fails to do something good), he feels a strong need for atonement of some kind. Were he to take his Test right now, I'd argue he'd fit in better with the White Order of Solinari than the Red Order of Lunitari.

Arulia is still too new to the game for me to make any kind of judgment call. I can say that Darga had most of his points in Good deities, particularly Mishakal. (I'm afraid I foolishly deleted his points when he died, so I can't give an exact total.)

Now just to be perfectly clear here, I want to say with great emphasis, that I am not telling you that you are roleplaying your characters wrong, that you need to change the way you are roleplaying your characters, or anything at all like that. Nobody has changed alignments yet, as far as I'm concerned. And if they do, there is no penalty for it. I am just giving a heads up. Maybe you find you like the path your character is on and will continue to pursue it, or maybe you will try harder to stick with the alignment you assigned to them at creation. Or maybe you'll ignore it entirely and just keep doing whatever and see what happens.

Regardless, I think there's a lot of opportunity for some great roleplaying moments coming up. The Red Dragon Army is completely Evil, and the party is now forced to deal with them, maybe even work with (or for) them. Perhaps they do so willingly, or maybe they do it because they have no choice, or maybe they go out of their way to avoid it if they can. Maybe they pretend to support the army in order to infiltrate it or maybe they try and stir up some kind of underground resistance movement.

==============

With that out of the way, here are the events of the first day (Autumn Harvest 21st, the day of the invasion).

The army sweeps into the city, unchallenged. Most of them are human, goblinoid or ogre. However, there are some that are a strange new creature that somewhat resembles dragons, but are humanoid in shape and size. They are called draconian and there are several different kinds, apparently. The party would recognize one of the kinds, the Baaz, as the 'demons' they fought in the mines that petrified upon death. The other two types the party would see are called Bozaks and Kapaks, and they seem far more cunning, but also far less numerous than the Baaz. The party would also note that the army is very well equipped. Most have masterwork gear, even the lowest of foot soldiers. Apparently, the army pays pretty well.

Verminaard is not the only cleric of Takhisis among them. He declares the Council Hall, which is where the Highseekers once met, is now a Temple to Takhisis and the black robed clerics move in and start redecorating. Speaking of the Highseekers, they are declared 'troublemakers' and bound in chains. The army has brought with them a number of large, wagon cages pulled by horses. They are thrown into these cages without ceremony.

The Holy Guard--or what is left of them, really--is disbanded. The goblin and hobgoblin mercenaries they hired join the army--or rather, rejoin. Most were in fact spies that had been sent ahead. Orin refuses to bend the knee, and so he, too, is locked up in the wagon cages, along with his wife and children. Verminaard declares the old fort where the Holy Guard were once stationed is now the barracks for the occupation forces that are to remain behind and control the city.

Verminaard also demands every citizen return to their homes for the rest of the night. Those who refuse will be arrested. Of course, there are 10,000 refugees in the city, and the vast majority of them have no homes. So they wind up stuffed in the wagon cages--men, women, children and the elderly, it makes no difference. The refugees camped outside the city are also rounded up. (Gregeddin and Arulia return to their families and find they are safe.)

Once that is done, the army starts going door to door, interviewing everyone left. They basically index the remaining population, getting down their name, how long they've lived in the city, their occupation, and so forth. Once the interview is over, they are given 'identification papers.' It's explained that the army will set up numerous checkpoints throughout the city. Without these papers, they will be arrested on the spot should they try and cross any checkpoint. Therefore, it's in their best interest to hold on to those papers. (Haahqae is the only party member without a home. He can stay in the inn, but he'll have to pay for his room each night. Now that the innkeeper has lost most of his customers, he can't really afford to let Haahqae remain for his performances alone. He may wish to consider getting a permanent residence; if so, let me know.)

(I've added ID papers to the inventory of each PC in the Character Stats thread.)

There are only about 300 elves or so in the city. Most of them, regardless of citizenship status, are rounded up and taken to the temple for 'advanced interrogation.' Tulbas is thankfully left alone, because Magnus vouches for him.

And so, by the end of the first night, the population of Haven has dropped from 14,889 to 5,240. That night, the wagons are driven off through the east gate. Nobody will say where they are going and none are heard back from again.

These are the events of the first day. Tomorrow, I'll finish updating the XP and level ups, and post the events of the second day.

Few words of my own if I may.

Well, as I told in previous chapters this game is a great experience. I enjoy playing and converse with all of you. There is tense in the air and it is hard to know what the next day will bring on.
In this chapter, opposed to previous chapters, many plans went wrong. I'm not sure why, but it seems many agreements we had fell in between and were not accomplished as we planned.
Still, this also happens in real life and Tulbas might have learned from it for future plans and their execution if he wouldn't suffer such great lose in the end on the chapter. This lose kindda taken over everythng Tulbas feels or thinks every second of his awakening hours (and probably his sleep too). He forgot everything else. All other things seems petty.

Magnus was played wittily and eventually came with his hands on top. I (Tulbas) let down his guards (pretty close to the end) and the result was terrible.

So, as I said, I enjoyed a lot playing the game and even got carried emotionally into it. Tulbas mistakes and their consequences got me somewhat shaken in real life.

I think Tulbas movement towards Goodness started when he understood Daxia might die for his actions. Raetmal helped that change with his detailed explaination how miserable she is and the terrible wrongs her uncle did to her. Also Darga got to Tulbas. He seemed also miserable but still didn't ask for nothing and tried to help all the time.

Now, with the last events I think that will change. (I'm not sure yet, obviously it depends on what Tulbas will meet). Tulbas was betrayed so deeply and lost all self confidence and all trust in the people surrounding him. That might even turn him evil... he has a lot of hate and resentment to the world (which is the highway to the dark side). He tried to help others but no one helped him when he needed. (It's not like someone could help, but overwhelmed with grief that fact doesn't sink in).

So... I feel there is a lot to expect to. But still, Raetmal's death is still heavy on my chest.
See you all soon.

It's curious how you picked up on Gregeddin alignment mish mash. With Raena and burzan betraying the group, I'd been considering that Gregeddin might be on a path for vengeance since his Demands were not met. Also with the new setting change it may appear like he has little attachment to things as whim and fancy take him wandering through the world. For example, when Gregeddin finds out that Raetmal is dead and Tulbas is now Magnus apprentice... Well the bard needs to learn about magic from somewhere...

Yep, that sounds about right (about the gods) although I'm slightly surprised I don't have a majority in some sort of Chaotic Neutral god (if those exist. God of randomness and whims?). Haahqae's rather unfocused, does a lot of things on whims and has a mix of trying to do good while completely disregarding some things which can really annoy people and/or could cause him to do evil acts, which was pretty much my plan in portraying Chaotic Neutral. Glad to hear that you agree.

Haahqae is very unlikely to look for a permanent residence. He's used to traveling the world, so he would feel unnecessarily tied down to one place by owning property. Furthermore, given the payout of these "good deeds" he's been doing recently, he doesn't expect paying his way for an inn room would cut into his cash too harshly.

BishGada, I agree there are lots of possible paths here for Tulbas. He may succumb to evil, now that he's surrounded by it. Or he may decide to fight against it and completely shift to good. Or remain neutral despite it all. I'm interested to see how you use these recent events to develop him.

And it's high praise indeed that a game I'm running managed to invoke an actual emotional response in a player!

mgbevan, I keep very close tabs on players actions and motivations. I don't know why, I just find it interesting to watch and measure how they develop.

And yeah, that's a good point. With Raetmal gone, the only mageware shop in the city is now run by Magnus. If anyone wants to buy, sell or trade magical goods or train in sorcery, looks like you'll have to deal with him, at least for now.

Haahque, there is actually only one CN god, if you can believe. Sirrion, the god of flame, passion and creativity. Haahqae does have some points with him so far.

Okay, I'll have the innkeeper start charging him each night for the room. You have a good point, though. Time moves fairly slowly so far, so a couple of coins a night is probably not going to break the bank for Haahqae, especially when he keeps getting these big payouts from adventuring.

==============

I've put up the XP and as you can see, we have a lot of level ups. Everyone except Kendra managed to reach 5,000 XP, which is the goal I had set for completing Arc 1. She's a few hundred short, because of her near death. Hopefully we can get here caught up with the others soon. (We need to hit 40,000 XP to end Arc 2!)

Unfortunately, Invisible Castle is down again. This makes it difficult to roll for new HP. So I'll leave it to you. We can wait and see if Castle comes back up before we resume play in a few days, and you can roll then. Or you can take a gamble and let me roll for you.

Haahque, your character now has the ability to use Find Familiar. In my games, I use it as a class ability, not a spell. But it works just like the spell, so if you are interested in conjuring a familiar, I'd recommend reading over the spell description. Having a familiar is not required, though. (If he performs the ritual in the city, I can only imagine what he'd get. A stray cat? Oh, a mouse? He is a mouse burglar, after all.) Your character also gets 30 thief skill points to distribute as you please, although you cannot put more than 15 into any one skill and you cannot put any points into Read Languages yet. In addition, because you are a mouse burglar, you get 5 extra points that you may put into one of the following skills: Open Locks, Move Silently or Find/Remove Traps. These 5 points cannot be split up, you have to put them all in one of those three skills.

mgbevan, Gregeddin now has access to the second level of sorcery. You'll need to find someone with access to that level of magic to train him in a new spell. Tulbas might be one option, as he just accessed that level himself. Ismene is another, but remember she only knows Illusion spells, so if you want to know something else, she's out. Then, of course, there's Magnus. You could also just do without for now, until you can get your hands on an enemy spellbook or scroll (assuming Haahqae doesn't beat you to it and stash it away, never telling anyone :P). You also get 15 thief skill points that you may distribute as you like to any of your thief scores.

BishGada, Tulbas now has access to the second level of sorcery, as well. In fact, one more level and he'll be ready to head to Wayreth and take his Test! As Magnus is now your master, you may learn one 2nd level spell for free, no roll needed, from him. However, it must be either Enchantment/Charm, Evocation or Necromancy, as Magnus believes the other schools are 'a waste of time.' (Note, you can still learn spells from other schools from him over time, but you'll have to roll normally for them.)

Some of you got some new proficiencies. Kendra and Gregeddin got a WP and NWP each and Tulbas got a NWP. Normally, at the end of an arc, we skip forward a year and say you learned your new skills during this time. We're not skipping a year, though, just a few days. So...we'll cheat a bit. Whichever proficiencies you want, we'll say your character has been training in them, off-camera, for awhile now. And you finally mastered them recently.

=============

With all that taken care of, here are the events of Autumn Harvest 22, Day 2 of the occupation).

Haahqae regains 1 HP. Under Arulia's care, Kendra regains 2 HP.

Verminaard packs up and readies to move on. He leaves a bozak draconian called Tethys in charge. Tethys is the Flight Marshal of the 1st Red Flight of the Red Dragon Army. He and the 1st Red Flight remain behind to occupy the city, while the rest of the army heads east. The 1st Red Flight consists of over 5500 units, including three red dragons (one of which being Tethys' mount). Most of them are draconian or goblinoid--strangely, Verminaard doesn't seem to have many humans in high positions in his army.

Tethys divides up the city, placing a different brigade in charge of different sections. Tethys himself moves into the mayor's former mansion, in the noble district of the city. There are four brigades in the 1st Red Flight, the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th. Tethys places the 9th in charge of the noble district and the 10th in charge of the merchant district (these are both draconian brigades). The 11th and 12th (both goblinoid ones), are placed in charge of the harbor district, the farmer district and manning the gates. With the refugees mostly shipped off, and the massive manpower now patrolling the streets, crime is completely wiped out.

Tethys makes a few declarations to further see the city's order is maintained. First, no citizen is allowed to carry weapons in public. Second, a strict curfew is put into place--no citizen is to be out after Last Watch (8 PM) without special permission. Third, all religions are banned save the worship of the Dragon Queen, Takhisis.

Finally, Tethys claims that tomorrow the shops will reopen and the city will resume business as normal. Although one wonders how normal things will ever be again.

Haahqae agrees to pay the innkeeper of the Steel Tankard 5 silver a night. This will cover his room and two meals a day. (I've removed 5 SP from his inventory). With the refugees gone, the place is pretty empty now. Most of the inns have emptied out, in fact. There aren't many travelers, but the bar does fill up with draconians at night who are off-duty. Apparently, they quite like to drink (and sometimes brawl).

Gregeddin goes to give the bad news to Mateo's parents today. They are a poor couple, and he was their own child. His father works at the docks, but isn't making much coin, and they both relied heavily on the money Mateo made at the Masked Dragon. Afterward, he runs into the kender, Pen. Pen tells him what happened to Kendra and Darga, and also a rather fantastical tale of an old god carrying the dead dwarf into the heavens. Gregeddin tries to visit Kendra, but is turned away by her husband, who believes she nearly died because of him and his 'adventuring buddies.' He then goes to the mageware shop to tell Tulbas, and learns that Magnus is now running the place and Raetmal is dead. Finally, he heads to the inn to fill in Haahqae on all of this, and keep him company while he recovers.

Arulia visits Kendra to help speed up her recovery. Until the shops reopen tomorrow, she is the only one working now, so what little money she can earn will help her family eat tonight. Norris fusses about, getting in the way until she manages to politely but firmly convince him he is in the way, and he leaves her alone after that. At one point, someone visits and she hears Norris shouting at them, then slamming the door. When Arulia is done, Norris pays her and asks that she returns tomorrow.

At this point, I assume Tulbas is still somewhat in shock about his uncle's death. Gregeddin comes to visit and tells him that Darga is also dead and Kendra is in a coma. He also tells Tulbas about the betrayal of Raena and Burzan, and Mateo's death. Tulbas, in turn, tells Gregeddin about Magnus killing Raetmal and taking over the shop. After the bard leaves, Magnus tells Tulbas that he has 'moped' enough and tomorrow they will begin his training for his upcoming Test.

These are the events of the second day. If you feel I got anything wrong about your character, let me know and I'll fix it. I thought I'd have Gregeddin visit Mateo today and Zoya tomorrow. When the shops reopen, it will be possible to buy, sell and trade again, so let me know if you have anything in mind.

Tomorrow, I'll update more.

I have a friend who's somewhat interested in joining the campaign, is it still possible/are there slots open? He's familiar with 3.5 and has some knowledge of 2e, but he'd have a lot to learn about the system.

As for leveling up:
I can't roll my HP due to invisible castle still being down.
1st level spell slot: for now I'll take spider climb in this slot.
Ok, I'll look into the familiar soon. Chances are he's hoping for a ferret :)
Thief Skills: 10 move silently, 10 hide, 5 open locks, 5 find/remove traps. Mouse: 5 move silently

Oh and on a side note, did I get xp from the 160 steel worth of treasure I found? Is that part of the giant quest reward?
