CH. 15: There and Back Again

Naras approaches Leena, "Hello Leena, I owe you an apology. I'm sorry."

"But I thought Leena was taking care of the temple while the old Kohen was gone. The new Kohen they have now took over for Leena," Jocelyn says to Ourgana before looking to Gallath. "Uh, ask Ouragana," she says. "She was the one that was the most vocal about it."

"Ouragana?" Gallath prompts, sipping his wine and sampling the food.

Sierra and Terra dig in, as well. The food is quite tasty, having been well prepared.

The group eats in silence for a few moments, nothing audible but the tinkling of cutlery and the chewing of food.

"So, uh...what should we talk about?" asks Terra. "Oh, I know. Tell us about your craziest sex stories."

Sierra coughs, choking a bit on her food. "Nobody wants to hear that! Not while we're eating."

Terra shrugs. "Well, what else is there to talk about? Religion? Politics? The weather?"

Leena turns to face Naras. "Apologize for what?" she asks.

Naras replies, "For being grumpy. If you didn't notice, you're the only one that didn't, I think. And I dismissed you too in an offhand manner. So, first off, are 'we' ok?"

Ouragana looks at Gallath. "If you don't mind, I'll tell you about that in private some other time" she says, looking uncomfortable. "Some people here already know the story, it would be boring for them" she adds hastily.

"I never heard the story." Baeros says between mouthfuls.

"Fair enough," Sierra says. The group once again lapses into an awkward silence.

"We are employer and employee," Leena states objectively. "It is your right to dismiss me. I would never argue otherwise."

"I don't think it would be," Jocelyn admits. "I never understood your reasoning."

Finishing his food, Baeros gives some remnants to his dogs and looks at Ouragana patiently.

The kohen lookd at Leena and smiled ruefully, “You’re correct, Leena, it’s the lawful view. But it doesn’t necessarily make for a comfortable community or family feeling; I’m_ just_ starting to get that. I’m not good at the touchy-feelie bits, but I’m willing to try.

“There were two things going on in my head, firstly dealing with the group who I thought, wrongly, had abandoned the previous Kohen somewhere. So I was trying to extract the whereabouts of him from them. And yes, I was trying to get something financial from them too, being happy to end up with just some stuff Identified. But I botched that up too when I let the Pastor get up my butt.

“Secondly, I had the expectation, as you’d previously said about the Glyph that you were waiting for me to announce the price, that you’d also wait for me to announce the price of a Remove Curse. At a minimum I expected you to look to me for a nod, just so people can’t play us off against each other. I was going to charge a different rate for non-Gontites and then trade it down for the Identify. Anyway, that is the point when I snapped at you. And that, my snapping at you, is what I was wrong to do and what I apologized to you for.

“So, I would ask you if you can find it in you to accept this, well, very stilted apology. And then tell me what was going on in your head. Please.”

Ouragana feels all the looks upon her, and she blushes bright pink. Her voice catches in her throat, and she sands up. "I.. it" she begins, then stops again. She gulps, and then throws her napkin on the table. "The ethics I had been taught didn't allow to kill a whole culture. No matter that I now know that these ethics were good for a pampered storm sorcerer princess who never had to face worse things than bad weather, and not for real life. To Pastor Blaine, apparently, that was just the first in a series of mistakes that make me a worthless piece of shite. So if you'll don't mind, I'll relieve you of my presence. I have lost all appetite."
She turns towards Sierra and Terra. "This is not the fault of the food you serve your guests, Ladies." Then she storms our of the cabin.

Val greedily consumes her portion, her table manners having improved a bit over the last couple years. As the situation becomes awkward she does speak up. "Fine weather we've been having isn't it?" then looks at Terra and winks.

She leans back and drinks some wine, taking a break from stuffing her mouth. "There was this time, well..., he wasn't real impressed, but I did end up convincing him any way, at least until his climax when my brood mother lopped off his head."

After Ouragana storms out, Sierra looks at Jocelyn and Baeros and frowns. "What was the point of that? She said she didn't want to talk about it, and instead of respecting that wish, you kept pushing her anyway. Aren't you supposed to be friends?"

Suffice to say, Val's comment does little to relieve the newfound tension in the room. Sierra and Terra just look uncomfortable.

"If that is the case, then I am the one in the wrong and who owe you an apology for speaking out of turn," Leena replies. "I will endeavor to remain silent when in front of customers in the future then."

Jocelyn rubs at her forehead, and lets out a sigh as Ouragana storms off. "Because I'm an idiot," she finally says. She finishes off her share of what food she can eat before she stands up. "Thank you for the meal. I'm going to take my leave now."

She decides to follow after Ourganga. "Wait," she says. "I'm sorry."
