Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh (This is the Game Thread)

Desolate and abandoned, the evil alchemist’s mansion stands alone on the cliff, looking out towards the sea. Mysterious lights and ghostly hauntings have kept away the people of Saltmarsh, despite rumours of a fabulous forgotten treasure. What is its sinister secret?

Gunter, Vee and Brax in a tight group, the others a little more loosely together, Kim at the rear carrying their torch, they move carefully around the bend. The corridor goes on for a short stretch before opening into another cavern. As they enter it, both Vee and Gunter see, out of the corner of their eyes, the glint of torchlight on weapons and know they're bing attacked. Two hideous furry faces belonging to human-sized creatures wield battle axes at them.

surprise roll: 7, party is not surprised
initiative for the gnolls: 10, 7

initiative and attacks for the party, please?

Amon is surprised to see gnolls of all things down here. Luckily, he studied their language a bit as an elective under Daos' tutelage. "You are outnumbered! Surrender!" he calls in his own language. It was worth a shot, at any rate.

========

Amon goes into full defense (AC improves by 1) and Dogmeat defends Amon.

Gunter drops his shield, drawing both his long and short swords, and charges towards the closest one.

Searos pulls out his shortbow and fires at the nearest gnoll he has line of sight to.

Brax drops back a touch, still wielding her staff, she pulls to defend the three mages, ready to attack if needed. "I will cover you."

Echo pulls out her darts to throw them at the gnolls if need be. She isn't going to waste her last spell on this.

While Echo pulls out her darts, Vee wastes no time and strikes the gnoll attacking her right over his head. It staggers, but does not fall. Instead, it attempts to strike back, but misses.

Gunter's shield clatters to the floor as he draws his second sword and charges the other gnoll, pushing him back. Both attacks hit and wound him, so that its counterattack fails.

Searos cannot fire his arrow at any of the gnolls without risking to hit his friends. However, looking around, he sees people approaching from behind, just coming into range of the torchlight. Brax can see them, too. They are not within melee range yet.

Dogmeat growls, but stays close to Amon, ready to defend his master who is not yet threatened. Kim remains in the background, holding their torch.

Vee attacks Gnoll 1 for 4 damage
Gnoll 1 attacks Vee, miss
Gunter attacks gnoll 2, two hits (one crit.) for a total of 6 damage, bonus attack misses
Gnoll2 attacks Gunter but misses 1d20=13, 1d8=6

(OOC: my regular computer broke down, I'm using my old one and don't have the sheets ready, but I assume Gunter has better AC than 6?)

I'll let Searos fire his arrow as first action of round 2 (as he's readied himself in round 1), what do the rest of you do? Please roll initiative as well!

Amon frowns when the gnolls don't respond or stand down. They are clearly outnumbered, why would they act in this fashion? Perhaps they were charmed in some way? Or...they had something up their sleeve that gave them an unseen advantage. Not able to act until he knows more, Amon remains cautious and alert.

==========

Amon remains in full-defense, Dogmeat continues to defend him.

Brax moves up slightly, staff still at the ready, she prepares to attack if the Gnolls press too close.

"Your overconfidence is quite astounding." She comments as she presses forwards.

Perhaps he has been thinking too much of the whiskey he smelled earlier, perhaps it is just plain bad luck, but Searos's attempt to shoot at the human figure apprearing out of the darkness just results in his breaking the arrow.

Gunter is in hot pursuit of the gnoll he engaged with in the previous round, but he is overzealous, and both his attacks miss.
The gnoll Vee has been fighting attacks again quickly with its battle axe, but Vee's armor protects her. Her attack, on the other hand, hits the gnoll nicely on the neck, so he groans in pain.
The second gnoll attacks Gunter, but misses widely as well.

Searos takes another arrow out of his quiver, but again, it breaks. He definitely should have a word with the arrow-maker.

Searos fires two arrows, 1d20=1 both times, critical fumbles
Gunter (init 1)attacks Gnoll 2, both attacks miss (the gnolls have an AC of 5)
Gnoll 1 (init 4) attacks Vee, but cannot get past her armor.1d20 =14
Vee (init 5) attacks back and hits for 2 damage
Gnoll 2 (init 5) strikes as Gunter but misses. 1d20 = 8

Brax, Echo, Amon, Dogmeat and Kim are not engaged in combat.

End round 2

Actions for round 3?

As neither Brax nor Searos have alerted the party of the strangers behind them, Amon keeps his eyes fixated on the fight before him.
