Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
"You also have an angelic aura around you Jocelyn, and you are not crazy..." Baeros answers without thinking much. "Anyway, what's the point of asking Gallath if he is a demon, of course he will deny it, even if he is one." Then he turns to Naishe with his brows down trying to be intimidating, "Look! if Gallath vouch for you, that's good enough to me. But don't stir up any problems on the ship or we will have to lock you up like any other trouble maker marine. And keep great distance from Penta."
Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
Jocelyn, Baeros, and Gallath (The Berth Deck)
Naishe crosses her arms defiantly. "Who the Abyss are you, anyway? You aren't the captain or even an officer, so don't presume you can tell me what I can or can't do. Try and lock me up, and I'll mess up that ugly face of yours even worse, if one can even imagine such a thing," she says hotly to Baeros.
Ouragana and Drav (The Hold)
"We do not have time for this," Penta repeats. "Demon magic is innate. They are not like wizards. They do not require spellbooks or incantations or material components. They use their magic as easily as you or I breathe in the air. You and your ship are in terrible danger if you do not release me this very moment!"
Val and Naras (Undine Village)
"This is Serenna," one of the undine says.
Naras casts her healing spell and the woman suddenly awakens in an almost panic. She looks around frantically, but seems to calm down after a few seconds of taking everything in. Weakly, she pulls herself back into the water. "What happened?" she asks the other undine. "Where is the chieftainess?"
"Taken, my lady," replies the male undine.
"No...how? Last thing I remember...they were attacking the shrine," Serenna states. "We were in the throne room. And then...darkness."
"It was a ruse, my lady. They sent a small force to attack the shrine as a distraction, and lure our soldiers away. Then one of their shaman plunged the throne room in magical darkness. They attacked suddenly, without mercy. When the darkness cleared, they had taken the chieftainess," the male explains.
"Then we must launch a rescue mission at once," Serenna insists. However, she falters suddenly, still very much weakened by her wounds. The two younger undine quickly help steady her.
"My lady, most of our soldiers are dead or wounded. You and your brothers only barely survived. We were only able to revive you because of this land-walker." He gestures to Naras.
Serenna turns toward Naras and eyes her skeptically. "I was wondering what a land-walker was doing down here. But no land-walker helps our people without wanting something in return. What is your agenda?"
(Naras casts Cure Moderate Wounds on Serenna, automatically restoring her to 1 HP.)

{OOC: Stunning post, Jaded, superb. TY. Great pic too! Did you draw it?}
{OOC: Any sign of a holy symbol on Serenna?}
“I’m Naras, and I came to heal some of your people because I could. I am a follower of Gonto one of her Aspects is Community. Your people appeared to have a Community. Without wishing to be rude, either you’ll understand that or it’s beyond my ability to explain better,” answers Naras.
The dwarf continues, “To be clear, I have no expectation of reward from you and did not come here for any ‘Agenda’ other than as I have said. All that said, I have two more healing spells and can possibly be granted a third if you give me half an hour. You have two damaged and unconscious folk. Do you want me to use my two spells on them or on you?
"And while you’re thinking about that, I heard that your chieftainess has been taken. If you want me to keep my nose out of your business, then fine. But if you want help then tell me the story, when my companion, Val, arrives anyway, and we’ll see if we can find a way to help. Underwater is really difficult for me – stops me casting spells as they don’t sound right.
"I do, of course, have other problems of my own, not least being a powerful genasai that plans to bring war to my town so if you happened to have any information to help on that if would be great but I don’t expect it to be the case and even then you are not obligated.
"Now, again it's not obligatory but it would be good manners to hear your name and a ‘thank you’.”

Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
Jocelyn looks to Baeros in bewilderment for a moment before she shakes her head, and looks to Naishe. "I have the mind to make the suggestion to the captain to drop the two of you off on separate islands," Jocelyn says. "Though, we can probably rightly guess that the captain doesn't want trouble on her ship," she adds. "I'm going to see how Ourgana is doing," she tells Baeros before she turns and heads back down.
Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
Val follows the next group into the underground grotto.
Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
"You are funny Naishe. A bit hot tempered... but no one is perfect." Baeros laughs at her outburst. "I hope we won't need to fight. Especially because you are a woman. Or demon. Or both. And Gallath friend." he adds in afterthought. "Gallath, care to jump into the conversation?" he asks begging for help.
Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
"It is not my ship" Ouragana answers. "It belongs to the dwarven sisters. and right now the greates danger aboard this ship that I see is the fight that you and Naishe will get into if we let you two near each other.
Tell me, how do you know all you are telling me about demons? You better try to answer me to my satisfaction, because your only way out of this brig before we reach the next port is through convincing me that it is a good idea."
Seeing Jocelyn arrive, she adds: "Convince me, a mage and Pastor Blane, a cleric."

Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
Baeros, and Gallath (The Berth Deck)
Naishe snorts at Baeros' comment. "You shouldn't underestimate women. We're stronger than you think." She glances back at Jocelyn as she departs. "I bet you drive them off a lot with that attitude." She displays a mischievous grin, as if Baeros had somehow just let slip some secret.
Jocelyn, Ouragana and Drav (The Hold)
"This is a waste of time!" Penta protests through the door. "I have already explained that. I come from a long line of demon slayers. Everyone in my family is one. We begin training on how to be a slayer at the age of seven. 'We will wield the strength and skill to fight the devils, demons, and the forces of darkness; to stop the spread of their evil and the swell of their number,'" she recites. "We are renown throughout the mainland. Everyone has heard of the Malachmans. Everyone but these backward islands, anyway!"
Val and Naras (Undine Village)
Naras does not see Serenna wearing anything that might be a holy icon.
"I know not what a 'gonto' is, or for that matter a 'genasi,' Serenna replies. "But what I do know is that land-walkers never come down here unless it's to steal our treasure. You say you help only because you can, but then make demands of us. You say you do not wish to be rude, but act rudely anyhow. Further evidence of the land-walkers' duplicity." She hesitates. "But it seems, at least for now, we have no choice but to accept. Know this, though. If I discover you are lying, I will feed you alive to our barracudas."
Turning to the two younger undine, she says, "Go fetch my brothers. Bring them here to be healed." They nod and submerge, just as Val surfaces. Serenna backs away from the half-orc. "What in the Abyss? That's the ugliest land-walker I've ever seen! This is your companion?"
Although Val cannot follow the conversation at all, as she cannot speak merfolk, the look of disgust on the warrior woman's face is pretty clear.
The two undine drag up the other two unconscious undine and place them on the shore. They are male and not quite as muscular as Serenna.
"I am called Serenna. I am the chieftainess' bodyguard," she begins. "We were recently attacked by a nearby colony of Ixitxachitl." Naras has never heard this word, and it sounds very difficult to say. It is pronounced 'ish-it-SHACH-itl.' "They kidnapped our chieftainess for some nefarious purpose. We have been at odds with their tribe for some time now. They often hunt in our territory and steal resources from our people. This is the first time in living memory that they have outright attacked us, though."
(OOC: I didn't draw it, no. I can do little better than stick figures, personally. I got it from a Google Image Search.)

Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
Naras takes offense at this, " My manners may be poor but I still have some, so thank you for telling me your name and your story. Sorry you felt that I was demanding you to tell us your story. It was an offer to try and help which is now withdrawn. I won't tell anyone else your story without your permission. Goodbye."
The dwarf turns to Val, switching to Common, "She thinks we're trying to force treasure out of them and are duplicitous. Time to leave. Now."

Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
"The only way that you are going to be let out of this holding area is if you agree to stop trying to kill people while on this ship," Jocelyn says. "Otherwise, you are stuck here until we find a nice little island that we can put you on."
Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
"Aren't you gonna wait to heal the others?" Val says
Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
"I don't underestimate women... quite the opposite." Baeros says thoughtfully. "In fact that's why I wish we won't have to fight." he finishes. "Attitude Shamtitude, just play nice and don't piss off any half angels."
Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
"She thinks I'm forcing help on her which is why I was walking away. She was threatening to feed us to her fish too. But maybe you're right, Val, thank you," responds Naras.
The grumpy dwarf turns to face the bodyguard, switching to merpseak,"Serenna, let's be clear about what happened here. You were in need of healing so I came unobligated to heal you and have done so. You were suspicious, accusative, rude, ungrateful and threatening so I was ready to walk away to prove to you that I was here just trying to help and did not require 'payment'. My companion, who you so charmingly described as ugly, has reminded me that the wounded do not deserve to be damaged by your words and manner. My companion reminds me of the grace of my god, Gonto, and her love for Community. Of all her aspects, Community is the one where I struggle, fail, the most. For your community I will heal these two wounded. And if you can't be gracious, just nod that it is ok for me to heal them without you feeding us to your fish."

Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
"Penta, do the Malachmans always work alone or are there others who join their fight?" Ouragana asks in an attempt to get through to the demon-slayer.
There's more to me than meets the eye...
Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
Jocelyn, Ouragana and Drav (The Hold)
"I don't kill people, only fiends," Penta replies from behind the door. "And yes, we do sometimes work together for particularly big threats. But I'm the only Malachman on the islands, and it would take months to contact my family and request they send someone else. By that point, there's no telling what kind of damage the demon might wreak."
Baeros, and Gallath (The Berth Deck)
Naishe seems unconvinced of Baeros' statement about women. She just shrugs, though, and says, "Of course I'll behave. I never did anything wrong. She attacked me, remember? I was just defending myself."
Val and Naras (Undine Village)
Serenna bristles at the way Naras speaks to her. "My people filled me in on the details. You did offer help, but then you acted suspicious, accusative and rude to them, acting like they were somehow trying to deceive you. Then you insult me by implying I am too simple to understand your motives because I am not a follower of your surface god and then further insult me by implying that I have poor manners if I do not give you my name in thanks of your healing. You act as if you are in charge here, or someone of great importance. Perhaps on the surface you are, but down here you are not and you insult me and my people by speaking to us in this manner. Do you think your offer of help indebts us to you so greatly you can be condescending and offensive to us in return, and there is nothing we can do but accept it?" she asks.
"Furthermore, of course I want you to heal my brothers. I assume you will hold that over my head, as well? I never threatened to feed you to the barracudas if you healed my brothers, I told you I would do so if you deceived or betrayed us," she points out. "I don't trust you, land-walker, and the way you are acting makes me even more suspicious of you and your motives. And I say it is not community you struggle with, but humility. You will heal my brothers as you agreed to, and then if you swallow your surfacer pride and apologize for the way you have treated us, I will take that into consideration as I decide what your fate will be."
(OOC: Not sure if you are intentionally doing so, but you've managed to bring down Serenna's reaction from Cautious to Threatening and are now teetering on Hostile. If you want to accept this quest or even walk out of here without a fight, you might want to consider your next words very carefully; just a head's up.
