Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
"Wait. Naras and Val jumped overboard?" Jocelyn asks. "And we kind of left them behind?"
Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
Ouragna nods to Sierra, then calmly walks down to the main deck. She doesn't want to be too close to the cannon in case it blows up.
There's more to me than meets the eye...
Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
Baeros is near Jocelyn when she hears the news and asks her question in surprise. He raises his hands to the sides and says to her very tactfully, "Women! Go figure!"
Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
Jocelyn, Ouragana, Baeros, Gallath and Drav (Quarter Deck, Bullring)
Thaddeus ignores Baeros' statement, as he's very focused on what he is doing.
Terra nods to Jocelyn. "Yeah, that was yesterday morning. So we've put a few miles between us by now. But it was their choice. They both left some things behind, though. So maybe they plan to meet up with us later. They know where we're going, after all."
Ouragana descends from the forecastle. She won't have as good of a view from here, but she feels safer.
"Fire," Sierra commands.
Thaddeus nods and activates the cannon. It begins to hum louder now, and the magical runes engraved on it start to crawl around the circumference of the barrel. Red light begins to gather at the cannon's mouth, forming a ball of energy. Then the pulsating orb of red light blasts forward, soaring toward the mountaintop. It looks like someone plucked a large, red star from the sky. It even glitters like one.
In a matter of seconds, the energy reaches the mountaintop. There's a sudden flash of light, followed a few seconds later by a deafening roar. A massive cloud of dust is kicked up into the sky, and a breath or two later a shockwave passes through the ship. The Bullring rocks as if in the middle of a hurricane and everyone grabs on to something to keep from being flung overboard.
Sierra, Terra, Naishe, Thaddeus, Jocelyn and Ouragana are able to keep their footing, as all have their sea-legs. The others have less experience on ships. Brock is knocked right onto his back with a grunt. Drav is knocked right over the railing, but luckily his fast reflexes save him and he grabs hold of the railing just in time. He holds on for dear life as the ship continues to shake about, like a big animal trying to throw him off. Gallath stumbles back and crashes into Naishe; the two tumble to the deck, limbs akimbo. Baeros attempts to grab hold of Jocelyn, despite the fact she is able to keep her footing just fine. However, he misses and winds up smacking the railing with his chin hard. He hits the deck, tasting a bit of blood in his mouth.
After a minute or so, the rocky waves of the water smooth out and the ship ceases jolting. The cloud of dust surrounding the mountaintop disperses. However, a spyglass is not necessary to see the result. The entire top has been blown away with enough firepower to level a small town. "By the gods," Thaddeus mutters. "That's full power?"
Val and Naras (Undine Village)
"Robes would just get in the way of our swimming," Shin mentions. "It's why we don't use clothing down here."
"We aren't sure what sort of spells the Ixitxachitl might use. They use druidic magic, like we do," Cye answers. "And they did use a darkness spell when they ambushed us."
"And they speak the same language that we are using now," Serenna adds.
Cye considers. "I've never created water before. Never needed to. But...I think I should be able to. It might be interesting." He sets three objects on the shore. They look like they are waterskins of a sort, but they are made from some kind of animal bladder. Cye explains, "Once the liquid is inside, it stays there. It can't be removed unless you squeeze the bladder. You can use them to put your potions in, if you have any. Because normally, opening a bottle down here will result in sea water rushing in immediately. This way, you can place the lip of the bladder in your mouth, squeeze, and the liquid will go straight into your mouth without being contaminated."
Naras casts a moderate cure spell on each of the undine, improving their conditions slightly.
(Naras temporarily trades her Ring of Fire Resistance for a Ring of Free Action.
Naras casts Cure Moderate Wounds on Serenna, restoring (1d10+1): 7 HP.

Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
Naras silently thanks Gonto for the healing and tries not be disappointed by the strength of the results.
She updates Val on what's happening, gives her a bladder and thanks the undine for the water and information.
The dwarf settles down to a bit more praying:
1. Command x2
2. Cure Moderate Wounds
3. Dispell Magic {OOC: although arguably this may still have been in memory}
After praying, Naras offers the undine 2 more Cure Moderate Wounds (and their choice of whom to cast them on), adding that it will leave her with 3 Cure Light Wounds spells.
When everyone is ready to go, the priestess checks her kit and then splits 3. Water Breathing with Val, adding that she'll need to cast a Vestment spell immediately before they arrive; it lasts about 20 or so minutes.

Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
Jocelyn had looked ready to reply to Baeros, but the cannon firing stole her attention. "...Woah," she says in awe as she takes in the damage that the cannon did. That was a little more powerful than she really thought it would be, and it could harm a lot more people than just the ones on the Poison Curse. She glances down at Baeros on the deck for a moment, then reaches out a hand to help him up. "Everyone mostly all right?" she asks.
Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
While all this is going on, Val summons Mist
Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
Ouragana had kept her eyes mostly on the ship and crew. Luckily, the people in the crow's nest didn#t come tumbling down... She runs over to help Drav get back on the ship by non-magical means.
There's more to me than meets the eye...
Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
Jocelyn, Ouragana, Baeros, Gallath and Drav (Quarter Deck, Bullring)
Jocelyn helps Baeros to his feet while Ouragana aids Drav in scrambling back over the railing and onto the deck. Naishe, who is face-to-face with Gallath, who is on top of her, just smiles up at him. "Not going to buy me a drink first?" she asks.
Brock manages to get into a sitting position, then to his feet, rubbing the small of his back.
"That was...incredible," Sierra says with shock. "Can you imagine what this means? Pirates will never be a problem again!"
Terra frowns. "Or every pirate on the high seas will target us, hoping to get the cannon for themselves."
"Then we'll blow them all away," Sierra responds. "Think of the possibilities! Imagine if we could build more of these? An entire fleet of Guild ships, armed with one of these bad boys." She pats the cannon affectionately. "We'd have full control over all of the trade routes. All of the islands would be safe from attack."
"Not safe from us, though." Terra crosses her arms. "This thing would throw the whole balance of power on the islands out of whack. Wars would be waged over them. Thousands would be killed."
Sierra frowns at her sister. "Just what are you saying?"
"We need to destroy it. Toss it overboard in the middle of the ocean. Power of this kind shouldn't belong to anyone, not even us," Terra answers.
Sierra's jaw drops. "You can't be serious! After all of the trouble to get this thing in the first place? Now you want to toss it into the drink? This thing could save thousands of lives. The seas would be safe from both pirates and monsters."
"Protecting the seas isn't our job. We're merchants...and sometimes adventurers," Terra points out. "Not seaguard. And if we could find a way to make more of these...so could someone else. Someone less responsible. Imagine if pirates got their hands on it? Tell her, Thaddeus."
"W-W-Well, that is, uh..." stumbles the mage.
"If we had one of these when the Soul Biters had attacked, we wouldn't have lost a hundred good people! They'd all still be with us today," Sierra argues. "Tell her, Thaddeus."
"Er, um, the thing is...," he fumbles in response. He looks between the two and wipes some sweat from his brow.
"Well?!" they both ask simultaneously, staring the mage down despite both being shorter than him.
"P-Perhaps...a compromise? Instead of using the weapon or d-destroy it, we can study it. Maybe learn some new things that c-could be used to help people?"
"A weapon that isn't used is useless!" Sierra argues.
"If we learn how it is made, people might make more or something even worse!" Terra rebukes.
"Oh..," Thaddeus says quietly, looking between the two sisters again.
Val and Naras (Undine Village)
"Did you still want me to make some water?" asks Cye.
Naras casts another cure spell on the druid and Serenna, then casts Water Breathing on herself and Val. She hands the half-orc one of the empty bladders, but she just sticks it in her pack and dives into the water, swimming to the front of the cave to find Mist.
Naras takes the other two empty bladders and places them in one of her pouches.
(Naras casts Cure Moderate Wounds on Cye, restoring (1d10+1): 5+1 = 6 HP.
Naras casts Cure Moderate Wounds on Serenna, restoring (1d10+1): 3+1 = 4 HP.
Naras casts Water Breathing on herself and Val for 3 hours each.
OOC: I had forgotten that Naras left her waterskin in her pack, which she left on the ship. So she doesn't have one.)

Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
Baeros stands up. He spits blood over the rail and thanks Jocelyn with his gums slightly blooded. "Damn! I told him to tilt the cannon a little bit up! You have quite a pair of legs, keeping your stand." he looks at her legs and body appreciatively.
Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
"If I blow into these skins to fill them with air and then sealed them, would there be enough air in them to get a land-dweller to the surface? Just on the outside chance that the rays have a land-dweller captive and we can rescue him or her as well?" asks Naras.
"If not, then please, water is always useful. It's essential for us, to be honest. I can normally do it, but I've used most of my spells for today on healing," replies Naras. "Val has gone to summon her companion, 'Mist'. So will we be ready in a minute? Or are we waiting for something in particular?"

Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
"I'm used to being on a ship," Jocelyn points out to Baeros. She catches him looking over her, and clears her throat a bit as if that was going to stop him from doing it. She looks at the two arguing sisters. "Terra's right. It is too dangerous."
Re: CH. 16: Homecoming
"This cannon can destroy more than a demon can" Ouragana joins the debate. "So, if y person uses it, will they be any better than a demon?" she asks with a sideways glance to Naishe.

Jocelyn, Ouragana, Baeros, Gallath and Drav (Quarter Deck, Bullring)
"You can't be serious!" Sierra says to Jocelyn. "We only acquired this thing to fight your pirates for you. Now you think it's too dangerous? Fighting them without it would be more dangerous. We'd lose too many people, even if we could win."
Gallath helps Naishe to her feet and she dusts herself off. "Demons can use magic, too. But so can mortals. Is using that cannon any different from casting a spell?" she asks.
"It was, essentially, a very empowered fireball," Thaddeus admits. "The metamagic runes on the cannon seem to massively amplify the power."
Val and Naras (Undine Village)
Cye considers Naras' question carefully. "I don't know much about surfacers or the air, but I heard once that the air you breathe out cannot be breathed back in. If that is true, then breathing into the skins won't help anyone."
Cye swims off for a minute, then returns with a large, wooden bucket. He empties out the sea water in it and sets it on the shore. "Here goes nothing," he says. Focusing, he begins to mutter in a strange language. Suddenly, the bucket fills with fresh water...and spills over considerably. "Oops, guess I don't know my own strength," he says. "I hope that's enough."
"Join us at the cave entrance when you are ready," Shin offers. The three undine then dive into the water to meet up with Val and Mist, swimming away.
(OOC: A person breathes in oxygen but breathes out carbon dioxide. Therefore, blowing air into the skins would just fill them with CO2.)
