Can be done with a pause at the end of every corridor run if you prefer. It probably more time efficient to do mapping on the fly though. 1 action to put away.
Until the ambush happens in the action of drawing the map and you need to drop it and then pick up weapons. Then find it dirty and ruined at the end of combat.

Dont mind how you do it. Just trying to flush out the method so there's no outcry if whatever happened is less than ideal.

I hope nobody objects but I've added (or moved) Passive Perception of your char sheets to sit just below Saving Throws.
I think this shouldn't bother you too much as it's the GM that uses Passive Per far more than players.
Fell free to check I've got your Passive Per correct though!

For any who're interested, ereason was that I couldn't find the Passives on all sheets, slightly different formats etc and got sufficiently fed up with the scrolling up/down to provoke me to actually go fix. :)

Thx Tristen. I agree.

SQL noted that darkvision in darkness is considered lightly obscured and so has disadvantage on sight perception. Normal sight perception in dim light though.

Hence I'll decide on case by case according to contrast and how I'm feeling at the time. :)

As a rule of thumb, if I haven't told you about something (relating to reading with darkvision in non-magical darkness) then you'd need to beat your passive perception in an active roll for that stated purpose. As its t disadvantage the Passive PER would be effectively 5 lower than normal.

since we [or at least i] didnt realize this (disadvantage mechanic) before going in, can we retcon some torches or something? Nix and Alecia probably wouldnt go underground without prepping for somthing that is an inherently known issue to them

TBH neither did I. Info courtesy of Squirrelord.

In passing one can expend a GM Inspiration to have previously bought a mundane item for which one has the money.
In this case as we're all learning you can buy torches/lantern for whatever you had the money for. (Nix/Alecia can pool their cash is they wish. Other PCs are each restricted to thier individual cash.]

So, once only chance, all PCs can separately buy anything mundane from the PHB for which they had the funds before entering the portal (and still have sufficient of course).

I would like to apologize to any of the members who like to sneaky sneak for shedding ..cough... "light" on the darkvision...

oddly enough Jim had torches on him even though he doesn't need them himself... guess that wisdom score was there for a reason

Considering they are onlt 1cp each they'd have bought a few torches if nothing else!

Oil (plus tinderbox) is good for illumination as well as suppressing troll regeneration, allegedly.

She has a tinderbox, she used it to light the candle.

You can still buy stuff retrospectively if you wish is what I meant.
The reference to tinderbox was a qualifier to the usefulness of oil.

Sorry, thought I'd done that. Here we go:

Sue spent an action to open his awareness to sense celestials, fiends or undead.
He sensed nothing.

Two more uses of this power until his next long rest.
