The group can indeed try this. But will they? And if so, how?

Yes. Is this blade end to the ceiling? Or floor? Either way, it would be a Disadvantaged Athletics skill check, please.

Investigation(Int)(0): [1d20] = 12

Perception (Dis)Advantage: [1d20+2] = 12+2 = 14 [1d20+2] = 10+2 = 12

Blade up, trying to hook the bar with the hilt, or any feature on the blade that can hook.

Athletics(STR)(7):[1d20+7] = 8+7 = 15
Athletics(STR)(7):[1d20+7] = 17+7 = 24

=====////==========

If pushing the gate up doesn't budge it, he will say the following.

"Can I get that hook again please? He will tie hook to the rope.

"Can your hand reach up there?" He will point to the loop.

Sue doesn't find evidence that the gate can move.
He's sure the near end of the pole doesn't have a hook on it but isn't cwertain about the far end.
The rung is easily hooked. Pulling on it produces no movement in the barrier.
The curved, but predominantly horizontal bar that joins the vertical bars together is easily hooked. Pulling on it produces no movement in the barrier.

Woody will cast the light spell on his staff so we can see better.

"Sue do you have a crowbar. Maybe we can bed the bars?"

Investigation: [1d20+4] = 17+4 = 21 to see if he can notice any levers to open the gate or any weakness in the gate.

When examined in the bright light the barrier looks very robust.

When Jim hands over the hook he asks "Are we sure we are going in the right direction? I find myself a bit turned around and am not sure."

The Stone of Direction ponits faithfully north so based on previous deductions the party need to turn left (NW) into the wider tunnel at the higher level.

======
Difficult History skill check would give infomation that might relate to the pole.
Afterthought: Sue would have advantage on this.

Seeing Woody cast Light abd then pull out a Stone that moves on its own, Darren offers (and casts) Guidance on the mage.

Yes, Darren is still with you. And you can have Guidance if you wish.

History(Int)(0)(Dis)Advantage: [1d20] = 10 [1d20] = 7
Guidance: [1d4] = 2
Even with Adv and Guidance Sue cannot roll over 12....
====//===
"Well, maybe we can swing across." Sue pulls back HARD on the rope and hook in the loop.
