Chapter 1, Landing at Port Collins

A D&D 5E homebrew, a short tale to get to grips with this new system. Many travel to Wovara, a mostly uncharted isle on the fringes of civilisation, where man attempts to stake a claim against nature and the unknown.

The dark skinned man is startled, his attention clearly engrossed in whatever he was fiddling with in his hands. His reactions were lightning fast to stuff whatever he was holding into his pack in response to being surprised. He splutters out "Uhh good, maybe. Helps with the sickness." Meran gets a better view of his face, it seems a little gaunt and skinny, eyes have a hollow look about them. This man doesn't look all that well. "Who are you, and what brings you this way, traveler?"

"As I said, I'm Meran. And I'm traveling on the boat to Wovara, same as you. Are you travel sick? Maybe I can help?", the cleric replies.

Jason looks out over the water, he sees a dark blue with whips of white that blends into grey towards the horizon. The cloud and mist has come down low so that it makes it quite difficult to determine what exactly is horizontal, however strong the wind it, the sky does not seem menacing, no sign of thunder clouds, and a competent crew with compass would be able to sail safely.

Downstairs in the hold Jason takes a seat along one of the benches that line the edge of the ship. The mother is trying her best to entertain two children, she has a tired look on her eyes. Jason overhears "Are we there yet? are we there yet?" being asked by the boy. The sister replying, "No Kalle, we just left, you don't have to ask that much, isn't that right mama? See i told you so" the brother, Kalle, replies, "But I'm bored! There's nothing to do on this boat!"

The older man with big sooty hands is talking to the teenage boy or young man, it's hard to tell his years exactly. The elder appears to be explaining something or trying to teach the younger man, "And see you can't let it cool down too fast or it becomes brittle and can shatter, but if there is a thick core then then it should hold it's form."

Sorin can also hear the conversation between the children quiet easily. Similarly the man appears to be telling stories to thq four ladies, who seem thoroughly engrossed by him. They sigh, ohh, ahh, gasp, and ask "Then what happened?!" every once and a while.

Rose studies the hooded figure from afar. The figure is facing into the corner staying still and not making any sound with their voice. She determines that the figure is normally proportioned, about the size of an average man or woman. They carry no additional baggage with them. She can hear the soft creak of leather as the darkly clad figure shifts their weight to maintain balance with the boat. Rose hears a familiar whisper in her ear, "What is leather good for?"

Jason smiles to himself at the overeager children. This, here, was what he was fighting for. For a better future for little ones like this.

Looking around, he finds a place to sit down and pulls out his gaming dice. He had them specially carved back in the army. Everyone thinks that being a soldier means constant action, but they couldn't be more wrong, as Jason found out early on. About 90% of time as a soldier is spent waiting. Waiting for supplies to arrive, waiting for the next enemy engagement, waiting as the top brass decides the next move. Soldiers get bored, so they find ways to entertain themselves. Games are a popular way, especially cards and dice as they are easier to transport.

Sornin will start to hum a tune, then start to throw some words out to see if he can get the children's attention.

He will then break out into a ballad about a transport ship who ran afoul of a band of sea trolls, but were fended off by a band of adventures, which will coincidentally resemble everyone he met on the dock, and he will make certain everyone knows he was there, without actually saying he was there.

Even if he does not get the children's attention he will try to attract the attention of the group of ladies who were cooing over the other passenger.

"No I'm not sick, despite what they'll try and tell you." The dark skinned man says grimly. Indeed, physically Meran concludes that he has come under no harm, but there is something definitely strange about the man's eyes. He continues, "Can't say that I enjoy ferries, Meran, but this get's me to the island and it's the only way. I'd better say who I am too, Patrice." Patrice looks up and makes eye contact when introducing himself, his eyes linger on Meran's face as the dark skinned man clearly comes to some kind of realisation, "Wait, you... you're a dwarf aren't you? You might know something about riches in mountains, bountiful, plentiful, cavernous riches inside mountains. Do you believe they are here on this island's mountains too?"

Rose takes a seat near Meran and the dark skinned man and continues to watch the black hooded figure. The figure remains quite motionless taking no interest in anything going on around in the hold. Rose can also hear the conversation Meran is having and can hear the stories being exchanged in the centre of the hold.

The children do take interest in Sorin's words, "Elsa, come over here! there's a story!" The brother excitedly drags his sister over and promptly sits right in front of Sorin. The ladies and man they are sat with also pay attention and laugh and giggle during Sorin's ballad. Blushing and gushing when they are mentioned. When he comes to a rousing end the groups is very happy, the young boy pipes up, "Wow Mister! That was great!" The man sat with the ladies also chips in, "Not bad there chappy!" and strides over to introduce himself offering a big handshake "Caavus the Fine, or so the ladies call me. And you've probably noticed the ladies: 'bel, 'bela, 'belle and 'bella." Each of the four ladies wave in turn when their name is called. The first lady adds with a warm smile, "That's actually short for Isabel." The second one continues "And Isabela." The third "Annabelle" and the fourth "Arabella. Don't forget me!" She adds coyly with a wink. Caavus chuckles warmly and teases "Now how could I forget you?" While walking back to the ladies and draping his arm around Arabella's shoulders. "So new friend, these girls love jokes, you got any good ones?" Caavus says to Sorin.

Jason notices that the children seem very content begin entertained by Sorin and his song. The mother too looks especially glad to have a moment's peace to her self. The man with big sooty hands is still conversing with the teenage lad, seems to be telling him or teaching him about something.

"Well, Patrice, I'm pleased that we have been able to talk," Meran replies. "I think that you are troubled by travel on the boat. When you get off you are likely to feel better. Well, you're right, of course, I am dwarven. And I can tell you that some mountains contain riches, but many do not, and few share their riches without substantial work. There are mountains on the island so it is likely that some will contain, as you put it, riches. But many will not. So why are you going to the island?"

Jason idly plays with his dice. There isn't much to do with them when alone, but it gives him something to do while he quietly observes the others. He listens and watches, and so far has picked up a great deal of information. He isn't sure if any of it would ever be relevant, but it is always good to know things. One never knows.

It was clear that most of these people are looking to start fresh in a new land, as well. He wonders at their stories. They aren't soldiers like him, so they must have different motives. Sometimes it is fun to just people watch. He is curious to how many of these people he'll see regularly once they arrive.

rose continues her vigilance on the shadowy figure but relaxes a bit eavesdropping in to the rest of the conversations and playing with the spoon form her mess kit. she starts using Prestidigitation to make the spoon dance and then turn into an illusionary metal toy dragon that flits around her hands and occasionally vanishes with a puff of black smoke only to re-materialize playing with the other hand soon enough the dragon puffs but this time another dragon this one looking like made out of the fork pops into being and the two play fight in the air in front of her enacting aerial maneuvers

Patrice stares and smiles wildly at Meran's words "Mountains, so beautiful, so so sparkly. I'm here for their riches of course, I'll be the first to find them, all of them, for me." Patrice jangles a pickaxe poking out the top of his pack. "All for me" Patrice repeats, smiling at Meran.

The Captain's familiar head and voice poke down from the deck announcing that "Land's just coming into view, won't be too long now"

Meran smiles at Patrice, "Hear that? Won't be long now. And good luck to you."
He stands and stretches.
Then wanders over to the person in the shadowy hood, and peers in, theatrically, "Hello in there! How are you today?"

The rest of the passengers don't seem to notice Meran going up to the hooded figure, Patrice is obliviously daydreaming about riches in mountains, the others deep in their conversations or story telling.

The hooded figure makes no sound, the only indication that he acknowledges Meran is to turn their back completely on the dwarf, keeping their face obscured in the hood and, raising a leather gauntlet clad hand with one solitary finger extended. This movement ruffles the figure's cloak a bit and a distinctive flash of silver from a blade on their belt can be seen.
