CH. 15: There and Back Again

Gallath snorts derisively. "She was a nut, probably. I've seen it time and again. A crusader for justice, or someone with a noble cause, runs out of enemies, so they make their own. If you need to get out, I'm sure Captain Sierra would take you back on. Speaking of which, why did you disappear?"

Jocelyn Blaine (Ruined City, South)
After a short walk, they reach an intersection. From the north comes a patrol, led by a bloodied Naras, clutching her spear. There are six sailors with her. Two dead ones are being carried by the other four.

From the east comes another patrol. There are no injuries on this one, but Baeros, his dogs and Drav are among them.

Ouragana Stormbride (Aboard the Bullring)
Using the formerly cursed, now completely blank book for notes, Ouragana starts jotting down things with her ink and quill. Although several hundred years old, whatever enchantment on the book that kept it from decaying seems to still exist.

Gallath (Ruined City, Southwest)
"Yeah, I guess you're right," Naishe agrees. "Disappear? I wouldn't be so dramatic as all that. I just got tired of the Bullring and all of Sierra's rules, that I decided to look for work elsewhere. One day, I hope to captain a ship of my own, be my own boss. I just need to get some coin, first. Hells, maybe some day I'll even be an admiral, with a whole fleet of ships!"

Baeros and Drav (Ruined City, Southeast)
"Not too surprising," Rumari says. "The attack was over a week ago, and we found most of the survivors in the first few days. Nowadays, it's rare we run into anything. Most patrols return empty-handed."

The patrol heads back to the intersection and sees Jocelyn and Brock coming from the south by themselves. They also see another patrol from the north coming their way. It is led by a bloodied Naras, clutching her spear. There are six sailors with her. Two dead ones are being carried by the other four.

Naras Stonebreaker (Ruined City, South)
Komal shakes her head. "I know nothing at all about a book. In fact, I'm not entirely clear who that man was or what he was up to. It seems we've stumbled onto something big, though."

Naras leads them south, until they reach an intersection. They see Jocelyn and Brock heading their way from the south, coming from the shantytown. To the east, another patrol is heading their way. Baeros, his dogs and Drav are among them.

"I agree," Naras replies, seeing adventurers approaching from multiple directions. "Komal, that's Pastor Blaine coming up from the south here. My fault, but I got off to a poor start with her and she may not listen to me. I'd appreciate it if you would repeat what you just said to her." The dwarf leads onward, fractionally slowing the pace, hoping to time it so that they meet the southern and eastern contingent at about the same time and thence to begin to heal the rift she'd created.

The dwarf thinks, ~Without their help, there's no chance of saving Narin, and wherever else afterwards. Quid pro quo of course.~

Val swims off and climbs aboard the Bullring and goes to see who is aboard.

Jocelyn spots in her tracks, and looks between Baeros and Naras. "What in the world happened?" she asks.

Naras nods to the the two joining groups and then half turns to Komal, smiling and with a tiny hand gesture to the patrol leader for her to answer.

Intrigued by the condition of the old book, Ouragana studies Detect Magic and Read Magic after completing her notes. She casts Detect Magic on the book while sitting on her bunk.

"And the League will help you?" he asks, very casually.

Baeros tries to look far into the areas of the city they haven't searched. "Maybe Thrax can help finding more people. We should speak with Gallath about that."

Jocelyn, Baeros, Drav and Naras (Ruined City, South)
Naras gestures to one of the sailors carrying the dead. She's a petite and short woman with long dark hair and dark skin. "We were attacked by a slaad," she explains. "Two of my people died in the battle. We are taking them to the captain so he can, hopefully, raise them. Forgive me, but time is of the essence, so we must make haste."

The sailors head into the shantytown with the two corpses.

Ouragana Stormbride (Aboard the Bullring)
Ouragana returns to her cabin and studies her spellbook. Afterward, she casts Detect Magic on the book. It gives off a faint aura of magic, but she can't be sure what school it is from.

She then casts Read Magic on the book. However, the only writing in the book are the notes she made, and they were not written in magic. So this has no effect.

(Ouragana casts Detect Magic on the book, with a 50% chance to learn the school (1d100): 79, fail.)

Val Urgan (Aboard the Bullring)
Her injuries burning in the sea water, Val makes it to shore and then climbs up on the dock. From there, she boards the Bullring. All of the crew appears to still be aboard, but the only one of her companions she sees is Ouragana. She is studying the cannon while taking notes. Suddenly, she stops and heads toward her cabin.

Naishe snorts. "The League. The League doesn't care about anything but themselves. They said they would help me, but instead left me high and dry. They're a bunch of bilge rats."

Naras nods to Jocelyn, Baeros and Drav, then says, "It was the genasai. In her words," indicating the patrol leader, " 'we've stumbled onto something big', so I'm going to try and see their captain. You coming? I sure could do with your help."
She bustles along, trying to catch up to the patrol.

Jocelyn steps aside so that the sailors can move through. "Uh, yeah," she says. "But I'm not exactly sure what I can help with."

(OOC: I didn't say I would immediately cast Read Magic on the book. I just wanted to have it ready in case the book gave off a strong aura.)

Ouragana walks to the bow of the ship and enjoys the breeze for a while. then she turns to look over the harbor and the town to see if there is anything interesting.

"Thank you, Pastor," Naras throws back over her shoulder, and keeps going with the patrol.
