[a coin, even a very thick one, would fit in the slot, yes. Or another similarly sized flat round object]

"Stand back, it appears I can put a coin in the slot. Let's see what happens," says Tabbi. Zafron will stand against the wall 10 feet away from Tabbi.
She pulls out a silver piece and puts it into the slot.

"Is there anything suggesting you need to put a coin there? Does anything in the riddle related to that or something written here?" Galan asks and waits curiously while Faladir grunts under his nose to Galan, "It seems your recklessness is infectious."

"Copper for your thoughts!" Van chuckles at his own pun while in the hallway.

Tabbi slides a silver coin into the slot, and releases it. The coin falls down into a space out of view, ringing out as it lands somewhere behind. A grinding/crushing sound can be heard, along with the screech of metal being ground away indto dust...
after a few tense moments, nothing happens...
===
In regard to the ooc comments, yes a ring would also fit
he coin was apparrently destroyed, out of view

Van yells from the hallway. "Magical loop dearie, not a mundane disk!"

Responding to the question of what triggered the lightning, Bryce replies "A solid poke with the wooden stick."

Zafron says, "I say we should continue searching the pew. We might find a key or ring for that grinder in the wall. Bryce stop playing with that alter for now."
"Bryce you and Tabbi should see if you can find any traps on the pews."
Tabbi will search for traps on the next compartment. If everyone is ok with that. Zafron will stand guard at the entrance.
"I don't like that skeleton on the ground does anyone what to see if that archway has any stones that glow when you touch them?", says Zafron.
"I was also thinking that we haven't found a way back to the main hall where we came in. We went through that archway and we disappeared. At some point we should probably look for a way out."

From the entrance beside Zafron, Bryce dryly replies "Oh I finished "playing" with the alter after the first poke dear brother" He chuckles to himself and continues in a lighter tone "The pews is good idea." He moves forward to give Tabbi a hand searching the pews. Discernable traps first, then for loot.

Faldair goes carefully to examine the skeleton and estimate how long it is dead, if there are any marks of it's origin, and if it can be raised or resurrected.

Tabbi and Bryce inspect the next row of pews, but neither find any evidence of traps from the outside. Bryce then opens his to reveal thousands of Electrum coins!
Faldair examines the skeleton. This poor soul seems to have expired a century or more ago. Thus I fear that would put him beyond the reach of such a spell for one of my skill level.
It is true we have not found a way back to the first Great Hall but there were a few passages in the second Great Hall we have yet to investigate. Perhaps one of them leads back. he muses

Bryce moves on to the next pew to rinse and repeat without touching any of the coins.
Re: The Heart of Darkness... [Main Game Thread]
Van will go around the rear pew, to the far wall. To avoid lining up with the altar again. He will approach the skeleton, and see if he can figure anything out about the portal.
