WotL OOC Thread II

This 2E Dragonlance game is set in the city of Haven, during the War of the Lance. Haven is a city undergoing great upheaval. First massive numbers of refugees pour in, then the city is conquered by a draconic army. Can our heroes survive under this dark occupation?

Whew, I went ahead and posted a timeline of the timeskip, but it took me several hours and I still haven't gotten to today's post. So I locked it, but you can see the week review and discuss it here for now. I'll hopefully get today's post up soon.
TristenC wrote:Can I interject some talks w/Tulbas about Sirrion in the week-long skip?
Sure.

Tulbas is sort of all over the map. He's got 1-2 points in almost every single deity at this point. Honestly, I couldn't even say which deity he would like best or even which Order he'll join when he takes his Test. Worth a shot, though.
mgbevan wrote:Also a quick question, since we are fast forwarding in the meta plot, how will that affect HP recovery?
Everyone will heal up normally during that time, even the NPCs like Pen, Ismene and such.
mgbevan wrote:On a separate note, I realised he is now disgustingly unclean.
djhyland wrote:Arulia, too, needs a bath. Unless water starts costing money, she'll take one every day (even if it's a cold bath).
It's assumed if you are living at middle-class status or better, you are bathing regularly. Gregeddin hasn't paid up for the month yet, and so has no tub (or other furniture). Arulia's house has no bath, either (and would be too small to hold one, even if she did). You can pay for baths at the nicer inns. They usually cost 3 copper each.
Haahque wrote:Concerning the ban on weapons...
Hmm...well, baaz (and goblins) aren't terribly smart. He could probably get away with that for the checkpoints and patrols. The guards for the noble district would be smarter, so as long as he stays away from there, he can probably get away with it.

Grubnick: Rank...

Yeah, but for a goblin that's pretty clean
But I suppose Delarn taught him to scrub behind the ears and such, so baths for him too ;)

Woot! Haahqae earned more then a silver piece by practicing his profession!
Wouldn't it be nice if someone came along and offered him 5 steel for a one day job.

On a side note: It appears that Haahqae didn't do very much in the latter half of the week, are we assuming he did some research on ancient history in that time?

Of course evil clerics wear all black. Sometimes they have skulls on their robes. Red also works. Jagged daggers are also suspicious, or clusters of people huddling in a corner and speaking in low voices.

Alright, a bath each day or just the last day?
Haahque wrote:Wouldn't it be nice if someone came along and offered him 5 steel for a one day job.
Heh, would he really take a job where he could probably die for only 5 steel?
Haahque wrote:It appears that Haahqae didn't do very much in the latter half of the week, are we assuming he did some research on ancient history in that time?
Yeah, researched history, went over that spellbook and scrolls, and it's assumed he probably spent time looking for evil clerics, following up on leads about the thieves, and probably looking for new work, too.

I'm reminded of a scene from Bored of the Rings. The context is a bunch of boggies (hobbits) are sitting around trash-talking the heroes.

"There are those that say he acts like he's got something to hide, they say," came a strange voice from the corner shadows. The voice belonged to a man, a stranger to the boggies of the Bag Eye, a stranger they had understandably overlooked because of his rather ordinary black cape, black chain mail, black mace, black dirk, and perfectly normal red glowing fires where his eyes should have been."

This was why it was funny to me how quickly the party was to trust Shima. I kept describing him as a shady looking dwarf wearing all black masterwork leather armor, but nobody seemed to notice how incredibly suspicious looking that would be.

Hi Jaded,
Tried to fill in the Shima gaps... how's this:

Twilight 2, World Tree
Shima - He 'looks for a source of coin.' The only jobs that are hiring, though, are the weaponsmiths, the armorer and the army. How much in each case? And what sort of jobs in the army?
He takes a bath, 3CP, late morning, to try and improve his chances of getting employment.. then hangs around the Steel Tankard for an hour or so in the evening, nursing a single ale and hoping to listen in for and speaking Cant.

Autumn Twilight 3, Gateway
Shima - He tries to connect with the thieves' guild but is told there isn't one anymore. Shima tries finding out more amount Arulia & her situation, realising that he's taking a surprising interest in her. Again, Shima hangs around the Steel Tankard for an hour or so in the evening, nursing a single ale and hoping to listen in for and speaking Cant, or an approach from a certain mountain dwarf.

Autumn Twilight 4, Bright Eye
Shima - Take a job at an armorers. Cut down steel tankard time in the evening to an hour. Try to bump into Arulia, get to know her a bit more, failing which, spend some time in the evening listening to Haahque's ever entertaining tales.

Autumn Twilight 5, Night's Eye
Gregeddin and Shima - spend the day looking for a fence, but anyone shady they talk to insist there are none. Word has gotten around that they worked for the temple, so now the criminal element seems wary of them. As before, armourer for work, steel tankard for connections, Arulia &/or Haahque for actual pleasure.

Autumn Twilight 6, Dead Eye
Shima - As before, armourer for work, but additionally sound out whether he'd be interested in shifting some chainmail, steel tankard for connections, Arulia &/or Haahque for actual pleasure.

Autumn Twilight 7, Winged Trade
Shima - As before, armourer for work, but additionally try to shift a set of chainmail, steel tankard for connections, Arulia &/or Haahque for actual pleasure.

=========
Is anyone in the group that Shima knows actually in the army?

A week sounds about right so let's call it the last day. Of course that probably means he should have had one at the end of chapter 9, so I guess we can Mark him down for two total.

Grubnick was pretty suspicious of the dwarf at first which is why he went to warn Haahque. He still doesn't really trust him much, especially since he hasn't been forced to by revealing his clerical nature.

Shima has no skills whatever in the forging arts, and so would not be hired by the armorer or weaponsmiths. They are both currently churning out masterwork items for the army, so have no use for a completele amateur with no experience at all.

The army is looking for soldier recruits. It pays 2 steel a month, but that gets better as you climb the ranks. He would hear word that the army is sending troops to take the hill dwarf lands soon, including Hillhome. (In fact, they'll have arrived by the time the timeskip ends.)

The only other PC in the army is Kendra, whom Shima has not met yet.

Assuming Locksmith, Herbalist, scribe or translator skills have no pick up, then if Shima finds out that Arulia's family have a forge, he'll offer to help work that.
If the local clandestine people were so quick to see Shima's one off outing into the temple then they might also be quick enough to see that he's doing precious little just now.
he will follow up any snippets of jobs (even if they're a bit dodgy).

However the thing with Shima is that before Haahqae ever saw him, Shima was advertised as Haahqae's biggest fan! Instant good reaction no matter what he looks like.

Actually advertised as the opposite, but the 3 Wis inverted it, apparently

So does this mean that joining the army effectively would take Shima away from being able to interact with other PCs?

Oh, in that case, I suppose Arulia has some small amount of coin (5 silver) to her name. If it's not too late to have her do so during the week, she'll go down to one of the inns and buy a bath for herself. If her sisters are available, she'll take them and buy them baths too.

If it is too late to have her do so during the week, she'll be looking to get a bath soon after the chapter starts.

Not necessarily. Kendra managed to weasel out of going to the frontlines and remain behind as a city guard. Conceivably, Shima could do that, as well.

Otherwise, fighting in the war can be done during downtime instead.
djhyland wrote:If it is too late to have her do so during the week, she'll be looking to get a bath soon after the chapter starts.
Okay, she can take care of that during the chapter then. Now that the chapter is up, let's not do any more retcons and just focus on the present.

Oh, I had meant the reading through Sekla's spellbook + scrolls to be trying to learn/transcribe the spells over to my own spell book (at least the level 2 ones).

If you're not allowing the retcon of that... can I just read off the scroll to memorize invisibly for the day?

Do you want to try and learn all of the 2nd level spells? List them in order of priority and I'll roll for them. (But remember he can't learn Stinking Cloud at all, because Evocation is one of his forbidden schools. He also gets a +15% bonus to learning illusion spells but a -15% penalty to any other schools.)
