Liri gives her horse a nudge with her heel and leans her head down next to its neck as the horse begins moving. There is a small trail, which leads out to open lands, at the southeast side of the clearing, opposite where the grotdeir came from. Maughus made an attempt to fortify the trailhead, using several sharpened tree limbs, but luckily the sharpened ends point outward. The jump would not be terribly difficult to make, if the horse were saddled. Without a saddle or stirrups for support, though, it might get a bit dicey
[OOC]Breila - Make a Riding Proficiency check to clear the defenses, or Liri can dismount to clear obstacles out of her path. [/OOC]

==========================================

Angel looks at Daos dispairingly. Getting to him would mean abandoning Fraso and Salia, and then fighting her way through the thick of the melee. Getting him out again would mean doing it twice.
For better or worse, the mage was now on his own.

==========================================

Fraso, still terrified, has finally managed to find his feet and is moving away from the wagon, shepherded by Hiric and Bastian. Papa, acting as rearguard, is beginning to waver. His earlier stream of taunts, curses and battle cries has given way to grunts as he pants for breath.

==========================================

Elias eyes Maughus. He's in the thick of it now, much like Daos. Getting to him would be a challenge for the ranger, but the enemy have their attention divided between retrieving the body out of the wagon and pulling Maughus from the saddle. It might be possible to get to him if Elias were to move quickly, although the press is too thick for him to employ his bow once he makes contact. It's going to be hand weapons only on the way out, if getting out is possible at all.

===========================================

[OOC] Still waiting for dice rolls and actions, folks. [/OOC]

Angel salutes Daos with her blade, before assisting Papa with the rescue of her employer, swinging her blade at the creatures she tries to aid the Cleric, and hopefully fraso.

(No idea where her attacks are, so I will do just one)

Init: 1d10=10, Hit: 1d20+2=21, Damage: 1d8+3=6 (Hit AC -2)

[ooc: is there no possibility to leave the clearing just passing slowly between the trees? Is the underbrush that thick?

If it is, Liri will dismount and clear obstacles rather than try to jump]

initiative: 1d10=9

Initiative=5

Bastian continues his fighting retreat, while mumbling to Fraso, "A little magical assistance would be GREAT right now!" If the group is sufficiently away from the wagon, and assuming we are still being assailed, Bastian begins a counter offensive, picking off the closest attacker and attacking them. Otherwise, continue the fighting retreat.

[OOC]
@ Breila - the trees around the clearing are spaced widely enough that it is possible to ride between them and through them, provided you don't want to go fast, or in a straight line. Getting there requires pushing through or jumping over the brush/bushes that have grown up at the woods edge.

@ Tempest - who is Elias trying to reach? Maughus, Daos, Papa, or the group around Fraso?

@Ruff-Hi - where are you, man?
[/OOC]

==========================================

Fraso looks at Bastian bemusedly. "I am no combat mage. My strengths lie in...other areas," he says quietly.

Then Hiric speaks up, out of nowhere, his voice full of rage and disdain: "That's why he hired you fine folk. And hear this: if you mercs don't get my sister out of here safely, you're not going to leave this field, either."

==========================================

Liri dismounts and quickly clears Maughus' improvised obstacle from the trail.

OOC- Maughus first since Maughus is (if I understood correctly) closer. If he can get Maughus out, he might also try to save Daos.

With the obstacle cleared, Liri looks back at the fighting. Does it look as if she could help getting Angel and Salia to safety?

[OOC]@ Ruff - A 3 for initiative is a good thing. Low number gets to act first, remember? Please post to-hit and damage rolls as well as soon as you get a chance. I won't be posting again until probably Tuesday or Wednesday of next week (on account of family/holiday stuff) so no rush, really. [/OOC]

No I don't. I haven't played D&D for real for over ... ahh ... 25 years. I thought high everything was good, high to hit, high damage, high initiative, high strength, etc, etc.
[OOC]Please post to-hit and damage rolls as well as soon as you get a chance.[/OOC]
Nope, not using my initiative to inflict damage at this time ... trying to get to the the tree line and up a tree.

[OOC] Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand we're back, live in the studio.
I am going to do something here that my players tend to do every tabletop game. We often go a month or three between sessions, and it is usually appropriate, as it gives everyone a chance to get in the mindset (although we never end a session during a battle, we are in the midst of one here, so there will be a bit of a tactical brief here, whereas the usual brief tends to deal with history).

WHEN LAST WE LEFT OUR INTREPID ADVENTURERS...
Maughus' choice for the night's camping place was a mid-sized clearing surrounding a large white birch tree. During the early watch, Angel and Liri took a walk into the trees and encountered a small band of strangely-dressed elves, who warned of an impending attack. The attack followed none too soon.
A pair of small humanoids scouted the party's encampment, and were chased off by the fighters. Shortly thereafter, a strange looking bald-headed, tattooed dwarf, entered the clearing at the head of a large band of uruk-like creatures which Fraso has called 'grotdeir, and several larger, ogre-like beasts. The attackers charged into the clearing, weapons swinging, but have for the most part concentrated their efforts on getting to the wagon and its contents.

Liri was the first to decide that putting her life on the line to protect a corpse was a bad idea, and she ran off immediately thereafter.

Daos took position atop the wagon, intent on turning the tide, but has since been dislodged. He is currently standing to the east of the wagon, looking for a way to get clear.

Papa had cast a spell on the birch tree, causing the entire clearing to light up and revealing the attacking force for all to see. He is currently standing between the wagon and the birch tree, slowly giving ground to cover the escape of Fraso, Hiric and Salia.

Bastian is slightly behind Papa, also covering the retreat of the others.

Angel is busy opening a way out of the press for the others.

Maughus had run his horse into the press, but his one-man cavalry charge was insufficient to break the enemy force, and stalled out halfway through, leaving him surrounded.

Kutz has seen the benefit of a hasty retreat, and has headed for the treeline.

And now we rejoin our story, already in progress....
[OOC]

Elias puts away his bow and draws his weapons, then charges into the press towards Maughus. The ranger is in a tight knot of foemen at this point, all of whom are concentrating on him. The elf's arrival takes the grotdeir by surprise, and he is able to ply his blades with savage effectiveness. The surprise lasts only for a brief moment, but long enough to give Maughus some maneuvering room. He spurs his small horse, and it leaps into motion, driving a path through the knot of grotdeir in front of it. "Go go go!" Maughus shouts as he begins moving.

Looking around, Elias sees himself in the midst of a large number of surprised grotdeir. The creatures are turning their heads left and right, and sniffing hard. None of them make look directly at Elias at first. Off to his left, there is a hole in the crowd that Maughus created by his passing. Maughus is shouting: "Move it, Firstborn!! The hole in the crowd looks fragile and temporary, but might be a path to safety if Elias moves quickly.

=================================================

Liri looks back at the others. Her path out of the clearing is open, clear of enemies. The others are not going to get out easily, but it looks like they'll make it, provided the enemy does not change tactics.

[OOC] If Liri does go back and fight, please note that fighting from horseback without a saddle and stirrups is difficult, and Horsemanship proficiency checks will be required in order for her to remain mounted. Let's say one per attack, and one for each time she gets hit. [/OOC]

====================================================

Kutz has found his way to the treeline ahead of the others, and looks back to see Angel forcing a path towards him. Hiric covers her back and leads Fraso and Salia, while Bastian and Papa cover their retreat.

=======================================================

The ogre-like creatures have managed to dismantle the wagon and pull out the shrouded corpse. One of them is carrying it away from the wrecked wagon while the grotdeir cover him and look for opponents.
