Of all the games I've played, there's one type that I like the best, and that's any sort of sandbox game: where there is no required story line and the players can run a muck at will.
I'm looking for new takes on the whole concept. Ideas to get the old juices flowing. I'm working on building a sandbox game right now, set in the World of Darkness by White Wolf: specifically in Mage the Awakening.
If you've ever been in a sandbox game that you thought was amazing, feel free to share, and explain what really set the game apart from others you've played.

Well, thats a lot like what I have done with the Superheroes campaign. ITs still nice for there to be some overarching story, but otherwise its a blast. Sometimes you want to RP with a DM who is restrictive, and forces you to think outside the box.
Other times you want a DM who will say "Sure, what the hell? You can do that..."
Sandbox tends to be the latter, and its a lot of fun. With the right DM.
Or Storyteller in your case.

Sandbox style games tend to be hard on prep-heavy games, because so many encounters have to be built ahead of time. The best sandbox games I've run have been with systems that I am comfortable improvising with-- White Wolf and Shadowrun in particular. I'd say most of the games I've run in those systems have been largely sandbox, because I could use a mix of pre-planned NPCs along with just winging it, and my familiarity with the system made it pretty seamless.
