Sandbox Games

Of all the games I've played, there's one type that I like the best, and that's any sort of sandbox game: where there is no required story line and the players can run a muck at will.
I'm looking for new takes on the whole concept. Ideas to get the old juices flowing. I'm working on building a sandbox game right now, set in the World of Darkness by White Wolf: specifically in Mage the Awakening.
If you've ever been in a sandbox game that you thought was amazing, feel free to share, and explain what really set the game apart from others you've played.
