Could Heal work for removing the exhaustion? It seems to me that removing exhaustion ought to be easier than restoring life.

I don't see anything in the Heal spell description that implies it removes physical exhaustion, only damage or things like 'feeblemind', etc.

Is there any way of removing this exhaustion short of just waiting for the appropriate amount of time to pass?

there is the endless endurance that deal with exhaustion, so maybe that can help. And there are 'time' sphere spells that I don't have access to them, making 2h of sleep have the same effect of 8, but no one in our group can use them as far as I know. Maybe jag?
I wanted it you hvae extra 6 hours to fill the cleric spell slots, but found no such option.

Not that I'm aware of. It's a pretty powerful spell, and finding a way around the 'cost' of using it is usually pretty difficult to do. It's kind of built into the system that way on purpose.
