Jim will be moving down the hall in 10 foot increments with a quick pause to see if he can see/hear anything before moving again. He will stop outright if he perceives anything. If he perceives something he will attempt determine if it is a threat and if it is will double back to the group. He aims to get no more than 60 ft ahead at any point.(not saying that is the distance he wants to maintain, just never wants to exceed that distance)
Perception roll for when he is scouting

"We have a choice?" Alecia asks and shrugs, taking her postion with Nix, a bolt notched and ready in her crossbow as she moves onwards.

"We could always switch." He says completely deadpan. But will then heft his shield with shake of his head and a soft chuckle.

Jim moves ahead of the group and the corridor snakes about a bit, widens to 20' and then reaches two broad steps which lead down to a widening room filled with lots of stone pillars. Archways can be seen in its northern, western and southern walls. Something metallic glints on the floor among the stone pillars.

At the rear, Alecia keeps her crossbow drawn and moves alongside Nix, keeping herself alert she spies over the room.

Jim moves back to the party and describes the room ahead. "Be ready, I'll toss a coin into the room and we shall see if anything stirs" He then fishes a silver coin from his pouch and creeps back to 5 feet from the steps leading down into the room and tosses the coin attempting to get it to bounce into the middle of the room, moving to the side of the passage as he completes his toss listening intently.

Sue will halt at the corner 20 ft down from the yellow ish area.

"The boy has skills it seems..."

While waiting on Jim's experiment, Sue will check out the walls and ceiling.

"Would you humor me and cover the light source for a brief moment?"

I can create a spectral hand to test things requiring some finer manipulation from a distance if needed.

Assuming I understand correctly, Jim wants to move up to the room while Nix wants to stay round the corner in the N-S corridor “20’ from the yellow area” which I have interpreted as the sandy entry room. But Jim doesn’t want to move more than 50’ from the group. I’m happy for the group to go with him or for Jim to scout ahead (further than 50’) but need to know which. Please advise which way the group intends to move in this instance.

======
Clarification on mapping:
Is Alecia holding mapping stuff? Or a crossbow? Can’t do both at once. If switching from one to the other, how often? As guidance, I’m happy to allow mapping on the move at 30’movement, i.e. mapping is an action. If mapping is retrospectively from memory upon reaching a room then that’s also fine I will allow half the normal (1 in 6, so becomes 1 in 12) chance of losing direction and throw in a wrong/random corridor angle somewhere.
======
Note on movement/marching order:
I think everyone has a speed of 30’ or more. Correct?
With Jim scouting I take it he is in general 45-50’ ahead of the party so as to be sufficient for the party to just/occasionally see his back/his heels as he moves forwards. This put him at the edge of the Light area so as to preserve his 60’ Darkvision. The Light spell obscures everyone else’s Darkvision. Any issues, queries on this, please shout out.
Is it then Nix & Sue followed by Alecia & Evenwood?
If correct, who is on the left and who is on the right?
(Isaril hasn’t posted in a while which is why I left it vague as to how many were in the final bucket. For now he’s a cardboard cut out at the rear of the group who appears lost in thought, i.e. won’t reply. This might change is Isaril posts again. Until then, he’s in default “Dodge/won’t speak” mode.)

======
Notes on map:
Ceiling in corridor is 10’. Ceiling in room can, without stepping into the room, be estimated at 15’. (It’s actually 16’).
Black circles (filled) are pillars. (The yellow square in each them is an artefact from Dungeonographer that I haven’t figured out yet.)
The yellow in the well entry area was to indicate sand.
Default (white) colour is dressed stone.
I used pink to show steps before I discovered the stairs icon. (I’m new to Dungeonograpgher.)
I plan to just use the stairs icon (for stairs) as of now. i.e. not pink.
(The black dot in the middles of each of the stairs them is an artefact from Dungeonographer that I haven’t figured out yet.)

**Is it clear from the icon which way is up on the stairs?

The marching order is Jim and Sue at the front. Jim is scouting ahead of the group. Evenwood is in the middle. Isaril would be in the middle with Evenwood Evenwood on the right and Isaril on the left if he is around. Nix and Alecia are in the back of the party. If Alecia can't map or is not mapping Evenwood would take that job.

I believe the work Jim is doing ahead will only happen once the group decides to move forward from the corridor.

[nix was offering information to the group scout, not proposing going first.
also, are you sayng mapping has to be done in the instant one passes into a new room? and not, say, after the room is secured wwhile still in it? because that's how it reads to me.]

Find a room, clear it, map it is fine. But it's the corridors in between that are tricky to remember..
