CH. 5: The Sending is Coming from Inside the House

"I'm sorry for your loss," Jocelyn says. "But since the wardens haven't been doing the best of jobs at catching this murderer, we thought we would help without their knowledge of course," she explains. "Could you tell us a little about your wife?"

Areilon and Val

The warden arches a brow. "Yes, civilians, like yourself. Now please move on, before I have to arrest you for interfering in a criminal investigation," she says.

Jocelyn and Ouragana

The man frowns. "What's there to say? She was a whore. No, really. That's how she made a living. The little coin she earned from servicing sailors and longshoremen was the only thing that got us this house, in fact. There's just no good work in this town if you're not a dwarf."

[Jenara]

"Good luck." She says calmly with all sincerity. "I really hope you catch them. I mean that." Turning she adds, "Tell your Captain, if she needs help, Areilion is willing." With that she walks with Val to the Barnacle Inn.

[Nuke]

Glaring at the warden but not saying a word, she turns her back abruptly and slowly walks away.

"I am starting to get the feeling the the wardens know more than they are letting on."

[Jenara]

"Of course they do. Ever wondered if we were Dwarves, would things be different?" Arei asks as they walk.

[Nuke]

Val stops, looks at Arei before looking down at herself. "What, different than this?"

[Jenara]

"Rather that if we were dwarves, perhaps they might talk to us." She suggests, "I feel... Powerless."

In a friendly voice, Ouragana asks the man: "And what will you do now that your wife cannot share the money she earns with you any more?"

Areilon and Val

Walking and talking, the two arrive at the dingy dive known as the Barnacle Inn. The place is fairly empty at this hour, but the same bartender Areilon saw before is behind the bar, minding the place.

Jocelyn and Ouragana

"Nothing I can do," the man says. "I'm just a beggar, trying to make a living. I've been trying to sell the place, so I can use the coin to sail to some other island. But nobody's buying, of course. Not with a murderer on the loose."

[Jenara]

Dressed in her full gear Arei tips her hat to him. "A drink, beer I think." She says with a smile. "Quiet here today. Oh this is Val.." she motions to the half orc.

"Do you know anything about the victim before your wife?" she asks.

Areilon and Val

"Oh, hey, I remember you," the bartender grins. "The knife-ears who can't hold her liquor! Who's this then, your bodyguard?" He laughs derisively and brings her a beer, expecting two coppers for payment.

Jocelyn and Ouragana

"I know she was human," the beggar says, scratching his chin. "A farmer's daughter, I think. Didn't actually live in town, but on one of the outlying farms."

[Jenara]

"No this is my friend." Arei says with a wink, handing over two copper. "Bottoms up." She says tipping back the drink.

"I see the Murders got worse, funny how a dwarf gets killed and the Wardens suddenly get serious." She says quietly. "Have you seen the other Elf? I think she is missing..."

[Nuke]

"Beer for me too" taking a drink after she get's it, Val listens to the bartender's answer.

"Other elf?" the bartender asks while filling up a beer for Val. "Oh, yeah. Wow, you're still looking for her? Ha! Yeah, she was in here last night, actually. Didn't cause trouble for once, just sat in a corner writing in some kind of diary or something." He hands the half-orc her drink.

Jocelyn and Ouragana

"Anyway," the beggar says, "is that all? I got things to do today, after all."
