Appearance

Mira stands just under six feet tall and reasonably slim with curves in the right places.
Her red hair sits just below her shoulders and is usually loose, or held back with a simple silver comb (her only jewellery). Intelligence is obvious in her jade green eyes, which are framed with dark lashes.

She is usually found dressed in simple white blouses worn under a black leather bodice, with brown leather trousers and a leather jacket. She wears Brown leather boots with a sheaved dagger strapped to her left leg, and a plain knife in her right boot. (She does possess a suit of simple worn brown leather armour but is only rarely seen wearing it.) Mira has been known to wear dresses and possesses a few plain functional items buried in the bottom of her pack (or currently her room).

Her plain lute is a permanent fixture always strapped to her back (a gift from her mentor who taught her to play). She carries her weapons with practiced ease, carrying her short sword on her left hip, and a dagger on her right, and an old iron shortsword on a scabbard on her back. She also carries a light crossbow and bolts.

UPDATE

Since arriving in Harmonia Mira has taken to wearing clothing of a Gypsy style, a style that suits her Stage name of Rouge, la Barda Gitane or The Red Gypsy, she often wears long flowing skirts, white shirts and a red shawl.

Personality

Mira comes across as quite confident, and often a little "Ballsy" (sometimes without reason!), its easy to think its all part of the confident singer act, she can be quite shy around louder or more confident people, but if she is the loudest people in the room. If she is there, you know it.

She prefers to sing, in fact many of her spells that have a spoken component have a little rhyme or couplet, and can often be heard doing vocalises and other practices, most of her Cantrips (such as cleaning spells) are sung rather than spoken.

She isn't a natural leader, but will take the role if required, she will not 'rush in' unless her friends are in danger. She doubts herself, doubts she will ever be able to escape the person she had become, with her sudden and increased wealth came a sudden ability to find better and more expensive alcohol that led to a number of mistakes..

She loves Elsa like a Sister, and is beginning to develop feelings for Sabrina, a young Barmaid and would be Performer who she has chosen to Mentor.

History

Mira was born in the town of Haven in 330 AC. She is the daughter of a serving maid, and a common labourer who saved the money they could to send Mira to study under the Seekers (who taught her to write and taught her the history of Albanasia). They believed that the Seekers would give her a place, and that the word they were preaching would save them.

The Seekers had hoped she would take on Holy Orders but she had other ideas, having spent a considerable amount of time with an old Bard (who called himself Bardon the Magnificent, even though he was a second rate player at best), he taught her the lute and develop the voice she had gained during choir practice. He also taught her that perhaps the Seeker Gods weren’t the only ones out there.

She played her first performance for money at the ripe old age of 13, to a reasonably happy crowd, this progressed allowing her to travel beyond the confines of Haven to Solace and beyond.

This did not sit well with her Boyfriend, an older man in his early 20s called Aiden Mallory, he was angry that Mira had forsaken the path that he wished to tread. He held onto bitterness that he could have been a Seeker himself and instead he was left as a simple Guard.

At the age of 19, after she saw the way things were going with the Seekers, she and Aiden had terrible fight, he was drunk, shouting the odds, his punch and her subsequent black eye were enough to make her chose to leave Haven for good, she promised to return to her family when she made it “big”. (Something they rejected as she had forsaken the Gods, and left).

Travelling North across New Sea she made her way to Palanthas, singing at taverns along the way (and gaining a small reputation as a performer along the way), she heard rumblings of massed armies along the border, and even activity within Vingard Keep.

She has resided in Palanthas for the last year, singing for local taverns (including the Song of Life), she has a small room in a tavern where she once sung frequently, until a Young Upstart stole not only her heart (And subsequently broke it) but her place in Tavern Line up. With little else to do to survive she began to sing at an "Exclusive" Club in the City, one where Nobles watched much more than singing, with her figure she was accepted almost straight away.

She hated it, all she wanted to do was perform but with the rise of the Dragonarmy she has been unable to return home, and has no idea what happened to her parents, they could be in the mines for all she knows. (Aiden joined the Blue Dragon Army and died in the Siege of the High Clerists Tower. By some twist of Fate Karl killed him!)

Ending up in the Demiplane was in a way the greatest thing that could have happened to her, she left her old life behind and now she has a chance to be respected. Yet somehow she ended up fighting the same demons and resorting to Alcohol too readily, Yasir while fun at the time was once again her finding someone not suited...

From Adrastia
TristenC wrote: Wed May 31, 2017 11:12 am No matter. If you insist on wearing your shawl there are things it would benefit you to know. There are three 'Nations' of Vistani called Tasques: The Kaldresh, The Boem, and the Manusa. She raises a finger to count each.

The Kaldresh are the 'Providers of Service'; it is from them the Equaarian tribe comes. The Boem are 'The Entertainers'. That shawl you wear is of the Boem Nation and probably the Naiat tribe; the Corvara would not have made such a gift unless it benefit them. She leans closer and looks at Mira seriously, If any of The Blood ask you, say you are a Giogoto of the Naiat Tribe of the Boem people. Giogoto means 'trusted friend'. It may be your only defense if a Vistani wishes you ill.

Adrastia leans back and continues. The Boem are the ones responsible for the things that spawn most rumors in towns. They are the most emotional and free-spirited of the nations. Some of them weave magic through music. They are perfect for you. Her mouth curls into a small smile at the friendly jest. The last tribe, The Manusa; are the 'Workers of the Arcane.' They are aloof and reclusive, spiteful and willful. They are the rarest, and I doubt you will ever meet one. She blinks, as if surprised. I had not intended to say all of that. Those things are not common knowledge away from the wagons. It will not help you with the locals, but if you run into a True Vistani, it may save your life.

Boem is pronounced "bo-AIM"

Sorry, the ‘text’ isn’t as long or polished as I’d like (no jokes about swords and fishing poles… I’m looking at you Kerap ;) ). This is one of the things I lost when my thumb-drive went missing. I had to recreate the little I have from memory a few weeks ago. It used to have 11 stanzas (13 parts including the Prologue and Epilogue). I’m pretty confident what I came up with is close to the original.]

Rautant shakes his head at the kender’s questions, I’m afraid not, my friend. Unfortunately there is no side room in the Toad for study as there is in the Silver Scale. Mira looks to the back room but the old shopkeep forestalls her. I’ve an experiment going just now, and I am unsure of the result… it could be quite dangerous, but… He disappears into the back for a moment and returns with a tall stool which he passes over the counter. Placing it near the wall, Mira has a comfortable enough seat; she has given lengthy performances on far harder stools. The bard begins her spell, chanting the phrase she had chosen to tie it with. Taking a smudge of soot she mixes it with a few grains of salt between her thumb and forefinger before closing her eyes and smearing the chalky concoction across her lids. A tingling sensation and a blue-white glow envelop her optical organs for a second before fading. It would be interesting to hear it again. From what I recall it is in verse. the old man replies. Elsa looks excited at the prospect of hearing it herself and Merrick chimes in, I must admit, you have my curiosity piqued as well.

Mira places the work before her, gently resting her fingers atop the gilded pages decorated in a fascinating array of scroll-work and delicate inking. As she reads she discovers it is in the style of an ancient epic. In some places pages containing whole stanzas appear to be missing, though not from age or neglect; they were likely removed long ago by some unknown hand…

Book of Legend

Prologue:
The Golden Sun Sank Down – Grown Red in his Anger
He Turned his Face Away – And Darkness Settled in
Then Silver Sister Moon – Drew Back her Ebon Veil
Revealing her Pale Face – Full to the World Below.
The Twisted Children Now – Of the Earth Mother Stir,
They Hunt and Feed and Bray! – Oh, Wretched Beasts of sin!
And for their Hunger, Soon - The Land ‘gan Weep and Wail,
And Bear the Bloody Trace - Of their Dark Deeds to Show.
Yet they Roam. Yes they Roam - Go Hide in some Dark Hole.
Still they Hunt, Endless Hunt - They only Want your Soul.
Rend the Flesh, Tender Flesh - And cry out to the Moon
To Ravage, Slay and Feed - And all the world to Doom

Excerpt 1:
With Silent Steps the beasts crept out, Hunting man as their prey
Both Far and wide they ranged about, No purpose but to slay.
Beast slew man and Beast slew Beast, spilling a crimson flood.
They gorged upon their rampant feast, and wallowed in the blood.
All manner of the wicked things, fed ‘til the break of day.
Wrought by forbidden couplings, Sprang creatures fell and fey.
Then Sun returned and spread his light,
Exposing the revels of night.
When Sky saw that, as he had Slept,
Such Blood had Flowed; Sky Paled and Wept.
He Bid it be Covered,
By Mist his Pale Daughter.

Mira reads on, horrified as the theme repeats in greater detail. Eventually, the ‘savage beasts’ form groups to survive against each other. One group in particular emerges as the dominant power, led by something only named as the “Cunning Lord of Beasts”… Humans are slaughtered nearly to extinction, and again the creatures set out for ‘one final hunt’.

Excerpt 2:
The hunt soon found them on the plain, their pain and death to bring,
And those few men that still remain, Surrounded with a Ring.
Yet as the Lord ‘gan strike, he paused. There growing in the mud
Symbolic of their hopeless cause, A purple flower bud!
And then the men, there in the rain; Lo, they began to Sing!
A Dirge-some, Doleful, Dark Refrain; the sound, a wond’rous thing!
And slow lowered the waiting claws, Still stained with human blood.
He called retreat with Savage jaws, And fled the falling flood.
“It’s best we wait, these men we’ll keep
And harvest them like grazing sheep.”
The Cunning Lord composed his plan
To make livestock of humble man.
Man built an earthen wall,
And raised it fast and tall.

Here the work takes a different bent, but keeps the hopeless tone. Humans survive for a time, eking out an existence by building heavily fortified villages and using the landscape to their advantage. The creatures continue to pick some of them off at-will, but have ceased their wholesale slaughter for the most part. The civilization grows and the passage of song becomes a prime element of the culture. Suddenly, Mira’s blood chills as she reads of the appearance of the “traveling folk who tread the mist”. They seek shelter inside the walls in exchange for services… “the telling of futures and reading of dreams”. The locals, suspicious of the gypsies, appear less than hospitable…

Excerpt 3:
“You roam the rolling mist like them!” Loud, the Song-Giver calls.
“Just like the beasts!” He cries again; from safe within the walls.
Yet through the fog a mismatched band, Strange of both hair and eye;
Born far away in unknown lands, from falling dusk did ride.
Hungry Howls of Hate rang then, Outside the Hallowed Hall.
And made a Massive, Morbid Din That o’er the land did fall.
The Strangers Turned with Steady Hands, And Raised their Foreign Cry!
They Formed a Line and made their Stand, Yet Knowing they would Die.
With Swords of Shining Silver Light
And Weapons Forged of Darkest Night
They Stood and Met the Savage Wave
And Many Sent to Earthen Grave.
One by one they meet their death;
The Last, Before his final breath,
The Dying One Defeats
The Cunning Lord of Beasts.

Epilogue:
The Golden Sun Sank Down – Grown Red in his Anger
He Turned his Face Away – And Darkness Settled in
Then Silver Sister Moon – Drew Back her Ebon Veil
Revealing her Pale Face – Full to the World Below.
From the deep forest Now - The Cunning Lord Returns!
And echoes soon Abound – A cold, Triumphant Din!
He cries out to the Moon – Never again to Fail!
As Leader of his Race – Never True Death to know.
Yet they Roam. Yes they Roam. Go Hide in some Dark Hole.
Still they Hunt, Endless Hunt - They only Want your Soul.
Rend the Flesh, Tender Flesh - And cry out to the Moon
To Ravage, Slay and Feed - And all the world to Doom
Jenara wrote: Thu Jun 30, 2016 5:58 am Mira starts reading the text slowly then picks up pace, the words finding form andpace in her mind, her powerful voice picking up the tune she sings softly.

"And all the world to doom....." She stops singing, her voice breaking with the last line, still on the chair she looks around, her eyes misty.. "So.. Every story has a basis in reality.. Now the writer put it in song, because if I'm right, that's what keeps these people safe...or gives them the illusion of safety..."

"The land was Savage, the people killing each other, so they made fortified towns, with catapults and drawbridges. Who's to say these beasts didn't adapt? Back home some of the Dragonmen dress as humans.. Why not these savages?" She was thinking quickly, her thoughts coming like a wave. "They rely on the familar.. Music drove the beasts away so they foster music to protect them.. Magic didn't save them, it's not familiar, so its treated with suspicion.. The gods have trouble getting here.. So healing is unheard of..." Leaning back she goes back to the end.

"The mismatched band... I bet loads of people ended up here, like we did, like us they wouldnt understand, they'd fight, and be slain.." she glances at the group through her open eyes. "They obviously believed, or were told that one such group would beat this.. Cunning Lord.." Taking a deep breath she lifts her head. "Its fanciful fiction written about the truth."

The night was not unpleasant. A small breeze stirred the moist, warm air and teased Mira’s cloak gently. Spring was nearly gone, but the occasional cold snaps the last month had given her reason to wear the thing as a precaution. Precautions… she thought wryly to herself. Her laden pack, a true rarity for her to carry, was another precaution. She almost never wore it when she wasn’t traveling, but tonight… tonight she had reason.

The soft sounds of her footsteps on the cobblestones danced in time to the flapping cloak, keeping perfect tempo. She had performed tonight, and it was late... truly late… Her purse, flush with silver, added its own accompaniment to her stride. She had waited months for this gig, and it had payed-off well. It wasn’t even far from where she lived! Musing to herself about what she would do with the coin and whether or not this would turn into a repeat contract, she trod along towards home.

Adjusting her pack straps brought her mind back to the reason for wearing it. A ‘fellow bard’, she scoffed at addressing him so; even in her head. He had made it prudent. He had been handsome enough, but he didn’t interest her really. A musician, but vain and jealous. Apparently he had made a name for himself some years back by playing at the Inn she now called home… He wanted it back. He had come onto her in a transparent attempt to convince her to change venues. Fool. She thought to herself. He isn’t even that good looking… He was, however, the vindictive kind. Better not to leave an opportunity for him to work mischief… and so she carried her pack tonight.

Gradually she became aware of the fact that she was alone. Even so late as this, she normally would have seen a few revelers staggering homeward. She had been so deep in thought that she had missed a turn and ended up elsewhere. A quick scan of her surroundings eased her mind. This road would take her home almost as quickly as her regular route. It was a fairly safe area. She could see a row of shops closed up for the night to her right. Dim lights burned to her left in a nearby public park, casting a hazy halo of light in a pre-fog that had begun to rise from the damp earth. Magical globes stood on black stands along the paths through the neatly trimmed greenery. It still took her by surprise sometimes to see a city use magic so… practically.

Continuing on her way, an odd sound snatches her attention and she stops. A rustling from the nearby bush causes her hand to ease towards her short-sword. With a small crash, a ball of fur bounds out of a nearby bush. The brown rabbit, having shaken off his winter-white coat, seems just as astonished to find her. Abruptly there is a much louder noise from further up the trail. Several figures appear to be struggling with each other in the shadows by the park…

[Ooc: I converted 5 Steel Pieces of her starting money into silver from tonight’s performance. It’ll help later, I promise. Sorry for making assumptions about her internal dialogue. I typically only do that for a first-post. Otherwise it takes forever to set the initial scene/mood/etc.

I also gave her a spell components pouch. I’m not sure if you allocated funds for this (3gp for 2nd lvl spells) and the Leather Armor or not, so let me know if I need to make an adjustment.
Go ahead and pick her spells for the day too. We'll assume she memorized them earlier.]

Pausing for a few moments Mira ponders how to approach, the odds were it was another drunken argument..
Gods she saw them all the time in the inns and bars she plyed her trade, they were mostly men drinking far too much and getting too anmorous.. Ok it went with the job, after all they expected some flesh, some of the men looking made her skin crawl, but they knew that if they touched her the Bouncers would soon deal with it.

Was that all this was? Or was it a robbery? She could go around, the walk would do her good, but not tonight, it was far too late, and she was far too tired to be taking the long way home, besides, why should she?

Mira checks the plain blade at her side and starts to stride somewhat slower than she would like towards the noise, the pack hung heavy on her shoulders and she was no enforcer.. In the back of her mind she start to recite a simple rhyme.

"Keep me well, keep me safe, keep all that is dear, in its place." (Her verbal component for shield, shes not casting it, just getting it ready).

-----------------------------------
OOC: No allocation made for the spell pouch, oops, so if you could take it out of the steel. Armor was purchased, spells are shield, magic missile and web, going along with the "prudent" theme here.

As Mira approaches, the silhouetted figures begin to take on more recognizable shapes. Two large men wearing odd cloaks seem to be restraining a third of average height. The shorter man struggles violently, but is held fast by the other’s superior strength. His boots make weak thumps on the cobbles and the grass rustles as the three begin to back into the shadows of the park.

Something seems strange about the twin-peaked cloaks that rise so high above their shoulders… the matte black hue of the leathery… Wings!

A frigid stab of panic forces its way into the bard’s spine. Draconians! Here! Whether it is some advanced scouting force or the city is under imminent attack she cannot be sure. Visions arose of legions of dragon-men marching across the face of her homeland… across her new home as well… No! She shook the thought off. The Dragonlances had been forged. The world could defend itself now. Palanthas was the very place that had been proven… but none of these comforting thoughts helped her at the moment… for now, she was on her own…

"By the gods.." Mira mutters under her breath, she couldn't take on one draconian let alone two.. But she had no choice right now.

Approaching the figures she assesses the situation, "Keep me safe.." She calls out through gritted teeth, calling up a shield of force to appear before her.

As Mira finished the spell a pale blue disk appeared before her before quickly fading into invisibility. The sounds of struggle quickly cease as she approaches. Still several yards away, the shadowy figure restraining the man finally notices her.

Jerking his head in her directon, the other figure whirls around. Patchy light filters through the trees and makes it seem as if there are two layers of overlapping scales shifting across the creature's skin. The small dull bronze scales of it's face showed concern at first, followed quickly by surprise at seeing her approach alone.

A crooked smile formed on its reptilian face. Shhhhh he almost hissed, moving slowly closer. We won't hurt you, girl. Only come closer... I want you to help me with something. Though he seems unarmed aside from a dagger at his waist, his sharp claws and teeth mark him as far from helpless.

[Ooc: He is about 30' away still, and just off of the path to the side of the park. The other figures are still in the shadows a few feet beyond.]

The grin widened into toothiness. Come, there's no need for that... his raspy voice called softly like leather being scraped by a knife. An unconscious flicker of reptilian eyes flashed past her. A quiet shuffling sound draws her attention and she risks a quick glance back to her right. Another draconian had emerged from the shadows between two shops and was approaching in a crouch. He was still several yards behind her, but his position effectively cut off the road behind her as an option for escape.

[Mira's DN: 30 1d100=30 wow... close one. ties count, though :) Mira hears something big moving several feet behind her.]

Trying not to react Mira asseses the situation, she should of hidden, or even better walk around, now..

"What do you want with me?" She asks with a flat tone, her hand resting on her sword hilt, she keeps her eyes fixed on the creature.

The Draconian opens his mouth, no doubt to tell another lie, when a raspy cry from the shadows erupts behind him. The unfortunate man seems to have escaped his attacker momentarily, and makes a break for the interior of the park.

Quit fooling around with that one and grab her! The voice from the darkness orders with a snarl before the dim figure turns to give pursuit.

The creature facing her growls and begins chanting something that sounds an awful lot like magic. A low roar behind her accompanies the sound of scraping claws. A quick glance back reveals that the other thing is rushing towards her on all-fours like some beast; flapping its wings to give it more speed.

[Actions and initiative?]

[Ooc: She can make it to the tree-line of the park before he catches her, but it is clear he is moving much faster than she would be able to.]

Drawing her blade she drives it into the creature before her, trying to distract its casting.

1d10+3=9, 1d20=19, 1d6=4
Init 9, hit ac 0 for 4 damage..

"Your intentions arent honourable, and your kind are not permitted here!" She screams, twisting her body so she faces both creatures. What in the name of the abyss had she got herself into now?

Mira rushes to close the distance between her and the caster, but is too late. Twin bolts of pure energy fly from his outstretched claw and a nearly blinding flash of light erupts as they strike her invisible shield. Ignoring the illumination as best she can, she thrusts her shortsword into the creature’s abdomen. The thick scales act like armor but her sword manages to punch through; resulting in a pained grunt from the creature for her efforts.

The sound of wings and scraping claws is almost upon her, and she sees the second draconian is not slowing his pace at all.

==========
Mira moves East 30' and attacks D1 with her shortsword.

Init:
D1: 1d10=5 +1 cast time = 6
D2: 1d10=8
Mira: 9

D1 Casts Magic Missile. Mira’s shield spell blocks it. No dmg.
D2 Rushes on all fours (draconian special movement) East 150' to close distance.
Mira moves East 30’ and attacks D1 with her Shortsword: Thac0 19, roll 19. Hit for 4 dmg. D1 is now Hurt (75% of hps)
Her shield spell will last for another 18 rounds.

[OOC: Sorry, I’m working with a new mapmaker so it took me a bit to get the hang of it. The rectangles at the bottom are shops. M is Mira. D1 and D2 are the draconians (the faded one is where D2 was when Mira first saw him). The green circles are trees, the hex blobs are bushes/shrubs. The black/yellow circles are light-posts. And the olive-drab path is.. well... a path :) ]

A note on ‘obvious damage’:
Barely scratched [90% hps]
Hurt [75% hps]
Hurt badly [50% hps]
Hurt critically [25% hps]
About to die [10% hps]

Wishing she would have kept her distance Mira keeps the blade her hand, driving it at the same creature she lets her guard slip...

1d10+3=12, 1d20=2, 1d6=3
Miss.. Utterly.

Roaring like some wild beast, the charging draconian lunges at Mira in an apparent attempt to tackle her to the ground. Just before he connects her invisible shield flashes an incandescent blue as it interposes itself and shunts him to her right. The crash of twigs and small branches bursts behind her as his momentum carries him into the brush.

Snarling what can only be a draconian curse, the other one swipes a powerful blow at her sword arm. His sharp claws scrape her wrist and arm, and the force of the blow sends her shortsword flying behind her to the left. It too disappears into the shrubbery, some 10’ away.

Finding herself without a weapon, her instinct in the melee is to strike at her opponent with her fist. This proves fairly useless when her blow lands on the hardened scales of his upper chest, but has no visible effect. He then tries to restrain her, but her natural nimbleness prevents him.

It is apparent that this fight is not going well for her, as Mira had realized the draconians were formidable before engaging them. With the other human having possibly escaped into the park, perhaps it is time for her to use the local greenery to her advantage.

[Actions & Init Round 3?)

==========
Init:
D2: 1d10-2=3 (charging, -2 init)
D1: 1d10=7
Mira: 1d10+3=12

D2 continues his charge north and attempts to tackle Mira: Charging (-2 init, +2 hit, +1 ac).
Thaco 17-AC4=13 to hit. 1d20+2=12. barely missed. Continues momentum, crashes into bushes 15’ behind (1/10 of charge speed) behind a tree.

D1 (attk 1) attempts to disarm Mira: Disarm (+2 AC, -4 to hit)
Need 13 to hit. 1d20-4=15 Hit, Mira is disarmed.
(attk 2) attempts to overbear Mira.
Need 13 to hit. 1d20=3 Fails. Mira evades him.

Mira prepares to attack D2 but is disarmed. She strikes with her fist instead.
Thac0 19 vs AC2=17 to hit. 1d20=2 (+2 to AC for D1’s disarm attempt) =4. Missed.

[OOC: In for a penny, in for a pound eh? Wow. Aside from the disarm, nobody can hit anything! That shield spell is definitely working overtime for you. ☺ Normally an unarmed opponent attempting to disarm you would let you attack once, even if you lose initiative. Since the claws are a ‘natural weapon’ however, the draconians count as being ‘armed’ for the purposes of a disarm attempt. The red ‘ss?’ represents where you think your shortsword may have landed. You can use a ‘withraw’ maneuver to move backwards at 1/3 of your speed without turning your back to D1. You would both still get your attacks that round]
